Tajikistan: Updates & Travel
Travel in Tajikistan?
- By now the civil war is in the distant past and its doors are open to the adventurous among us. Located on the western slopes of the Pamir Mountains, visitors will be amazed at the beauty and hospitality of this relatively unknown little country. Despite about seven decades of Soviet culture, the country has retained much of its original culture and traditions. For example, outside the cities you will find most people still walking around in traditional costumes and followers of Zarathustra can even be found in some mountain villages. In the west are the two main cities of Tajikistan; Dushanbe (capital) in the middle and Khudjand in the north (in the Ferghana valley). Between these two cities lies the beautiful Fan Mountains with breathtaking mountain lakes. To the east lies the famous Pamir Mountains with Peak Somoni (7495 m) as its peak. Keep in mind that due to the rugged mountain ranges in Tajikistan, it is not an easily travelable country. But definitely more than worth the effort....

How does the healthcare system work in Tajikistan?
What is the quality of healthcare in Tajikistan?
- During the Soviet era, Tajikistan had an extensive, state-funded healthcare system. This model was largely based on a wide network of hospitals and outpatient clinics that provided free care to the population.
- Unfortunately, after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the civil war in the 1990s, the healthcare system came under severe pressure. Many hospitals became outdated and medical resources became scarce.
- Today, healthcare in Tajikistan is still developing. The government is trying to improve the public healthcare sector, but limited funding and a shortage of qualified personnel mean that quality is not always guaranteed. This has led to the growth of the private healthcare sector.
- Pharmacies, known locally as 'Apteka', are widespread in urban areas. Basic medicines are usually available, but specific or specialized medicines may not be. It is wise to carry a supply of your prescribed medicines, along with a doctor's note for customs.
- The emergency number for ambulances is 03, but the response can be quite slow. Especially outside Dushanbe, it is better not to count on this. The fastest way is to arrange your own transport. There are emergency care centres in Dushanbe and other large cities, but they are often outdated. Outside the cities, evacuation to a neighbouring country may be necessary.
- For Tajikistan, it is recommended to bring a complete first aid kit with you, including medicines.
How does the public healthcare system work in Tajikistan?
- Public healthcare in Tajikistan is mainly financed and managed by the government.
- Although the doctors are often good, the sector struggles with limited resources. This can lead to longer waiting times and limited availability of advanced medical equipment.
- The medical staff mainly speaks Tajik or Russian, which makes communication difficult for non-speakers.
How does the private healthcare system work in Tajikistan?
- Private healthcare is a lot more expensive than public healthcare. Make sure you have good international health insurance that also covers medical evacuation.
- Most private institutions can be found in the capital Dushanbe. Some well-known clinics are the Ibn Sino Medical Center, Dushanbe Private Clinic, Zijavuddin Medical Center.
How is the general practitioner arranged in Tajikistan?
- In Tajikistan, the concept of a 'general practitioner' is less common. Patients often turn directly to specialists or hospitals for medical care.
- It is useful to immediately obtain information from other foreigners or embassies about reliable doctors and clinics upon arrival.
How is the dentist arranged in Tajikistan?
- Dental services are available, but the quality can vary. Private clinics generally offer better facilities and hygiene.
- Again, it is useful to ask other foreigners for recommendations for a good dentist.
How is pregnancy care arranged in Tajikistan?
- Maternity care is available, but expats often opt for private hospitals or even give birth in a neighboring country.
- Infant mortality in Tajikistan is higher than in Western countries, especially in rural areas. This is due to limited access to advanced medical care and malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies in mothers and children.
- Maternity care in Tajikistan varies between urban and rural areas. In cities such as Dushanbe, there are hospitals and clinics that offer prenatal care. However, the facilities and equipment may differ from what you are used to.
- Consider seeking care at private clinics in urban areas and make sure you have good insurance that covers maternity care.
How safe or unsafe is a trip or stay in Tajikistan?
What should you pay attention to in terms of safety in Tajikistan?
- Tajikistan is generally safe for travellers and expats, but it remains a developing country with some challenges. Petty crime such as pickpocketing and scams is common, especially in Dushanbe and at markets.
- Border areas with Afghanistan are not the place for a Sunday stroll. There are occasional incidents of smuggling and armed groups.
- The Gorno-Badakhshan (Pamir region) is a breathtakingly beautiful region, but also politically sensitive. Tensions sometimes arise here between the local population and the government.
- Tajikistan is also in a seismically active zone, so it helps to know where the nearest shelter is.
What should you look out for in terms of diseases in Tajikistan?
- Check the recommended vaccinations well before you travel.
- Tuberculosis is a problem in Tajikistan, especially in rural areas.
- Dushanbe can experience worse air quality in winter due to pollution and can cause problems for people with already sensitive airways.
- Tap water: Just don’t. Drink bottled water only or boil it for at least a minute.
What should you pay attention to when it comes to traffic in Tajikistan?
- Expect creative driving and little enforcement of traffic laws.
- Roads or no roads? It depends on where you are. Large cities have good, paved roads, but in rural areas you’re better off getting a 4x4.
- Also, many roads have no street lighting, which can make driving at night difficult.
- Shared taxis are popular, but always negotiate the price in advance. Use official taxis rather than random cars that stop when you raise your hand.
- Marshrutkas (minibuses) are cheap, busy and an adventure in themselves. Hold on tight to your bag and don’t be surprised if you end up next to a sack of potatoes.
- There are a few long-distance trains, but don’t expect a high-speed experience.
