Het is al een lange tijd bekend dat agressie in de vroege kindertijd een voorspeller is voor latere sociale en psychologische aanpassingsproblemen. Hierom is er veel onderzoek gedaan naar de factoren van agressief gedrag bij kinderen. De aandacht is echter voornamelijk gericht op fysiek agressief gedrag, wat vaker bij jongens voorkomt dan bij meisjes. Tegenwoordig kijkt men ook steeds vaker naar relationele agressie. Hiermee wordt gedragingen als sociale uitsluiting of het verspreiden van geruchten bedoeld. Het gaat dus om het aantasten van sociale relaties.
Uit onderzoek dat gedaan is naar relationele agressie blijkt dat relationele agressieve kinderen op emotioneel en sociaal gebied minder goed zijn aangepast dan de ‘normale’ agressieve kinderen. Hier bovenop blijkt dat relationele agressie geassocieerd is met toekomstige afwijzing en met internaliserende en externaliserende problemen voor zowel jongens als meisjes.
De studie die in dit artikel besproken zal worden, onderzoekt drie perspectieven van ouder-kind relaties: opvoedingsstijlen (parenting styles), psychologische controle en de bindingstheorie (attachment theory). Er zal worden onderzocht of deze drie perspectieven invloed hebben op het ontstaan van relationele agressie. Er zijn enkele hypothesen vooraf opgesteld:
Hypothese 1: Kinderen die opgevoed zijn door middel van een permissief of autoritair stijl zullen meer relationele agressief gedrag vertonen dan kinderen die zijn opgevoed met de autoritaire opvoedingsstijl.
Hypothese 2: Kinderen die een ouder-kind relatie hebben die gekenmerkt wordt door psychologische controle zullen meer relationeel agressief gedrag vertonen.
Over de bindingstheorie is geen hypothese gesteld, omdat daar nog geen eerder onderzoek naar is gedaan.
Methode
Er hebben 122 families en 23 leraren meegedaan aan de studie. Het aantal jongens en meisjes was ongeveer gelijk verdeeld. De leeftijden verschillen zeer; leeftijden schommelen tussen de 10 maanden en 2 jaar oud. De participanten komen uit twee grote steden in Amerika.
Er zijn verschillende factoren gemeten: beoordeling agressie door de leraar, ouders’ beoordeling agressie, opvoedingsstijl ouders (gemeten door de ouders), ouders’ beoordeling psychologische controle en ouders’ verslag van de soort attachment (door middel van de ‘Parent/child reunion inventory’).
Conclusie & discussie
Verschillende zaken werden duidelijk uit het onderzoek. Zo bleek dat de beoordelingen van de ouders en van de leraren m.b.t. relationele agressie flink van elkaar verschilden. Verder bleek er een positieve correlatie te zijn tussen de ouders’ opvoedingsstijl (autoritair en permissief) en de mate van relationele agressie. Ook het geslacht van de ouders heeft invloed op de relatie tussen opvoedingsstijlen en agressie. Voor jongens was de moeders permissieve opvoedingsstijl en de vaders autoritaire stijl geassocieerd met relationele agressie. Voor meisjes was zowel de autoritaire stijl van beide ouders als de permissieve opvoedingsstijl van de moeder geassocieerd met relationele agressie.
Verder bleek de mate van psychologische controle positief gecorreleerd te zijn met relationele en fysieke agressieve gedragingen. Dit geld bij meisjes voor het gebruik van psychologische controle door zowel de moeder als de vader. Bij jongens ligt dit anders; de vaders psychologische controle heeft een negatieve invloed op relationele agressie. Daarnaast blijkt dat relationele agressie vaker voorkomt bij meisjes als die een onzekere binding bij hebben met hun moeder. Bij jongens was relationele agressie gelinkt met een onzekere binding aan vaders. Hier bovenop blijkt dat voor meisjes een onzekere binding met hun vader geassocieerd is met fysieke agressie.
Toekomstig onderzoek moet zich onder andere richten op longitudinaal onderzoek. Verder moet er worden gekeken naar andere factoren die kunnen helpen om relationele agressie te verklaren. Ook moet er gekeken worden naar de slachtoffer van het kind met relationele agressie.
