  • For this chapter, focus on the important developments in the history of social psychology.
  • Then, also make a list of the important subfields within social psychology that are popular and influential nowadays.

Chapter 2: How is social psychological research conducted?

  • For this chapter, make a list of the important features that are contained in a research study (such as; what is the method, what kind of variables are included, what kind of ethical considerations can be there, et cetera). In this way, you obtain an overview of all important key terms in this chapter.

Chapter 3: What does the social self entail?

  • When studying this extensive chapter, make three lists of the factors that make up the social self: self-concept, self-esteem and self-presentation.
  • List the important factors, that can be more or less be traced back to the subheadings within this chapter, under these general factors. 
  • Write down the important key terms that belong to these factors.

Chapter 4: How do we perceive persons?

  • Write a story in which you include the step-by-step of how someone forms an impression of another person. Include as much key words as you can.

Chapter 5: How do stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination play a role in day to day social life?

  • Make a list of the factors that influence stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination. 
  • Also make a list of the different forms of stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination that were discussed in this chapter.

  • Make three lists, titled the source, the message, and the audience, and list underneath what factors can contribute to persuasion.
  • For studying this chapter, focus specifically on the theory of cognitive dissonance.

Chapter 7: When do people conform, comply or obey and why?

  • Make a list for each of the topics of this chapter: conformity, compliance and obedience, and write down the important key terms.
  • Focus in depth on the classic experiments on each of these topics, among others Milgram's experiment.

Chapter 8: How does social influence have an effect on group processes?

  • For studying this chapter, make a list of all the key terms that are in this chapter and write down their definitions.

Chapter 9: How do attraction and close relationships form?

  • When studying this chapter, focus specifically on the different theories on attraction and love, such as equity theory, social exchange theory, the triangular theory of love, et cetera.

Chapter 10: Why and when do we help other people?

  • When studying this chapter, focus on the different (evolutionary) explanations for prosocial behavior and empathy.
  • Also make three lists with the three categories of influence on helping behaviors: situational factors, personal factors, and interpersonal factors. Write down important key terms for each of these categories.

Chapter 11: What are the causes of aggression?

  • Make a list of the factors that explain differences between people in likelihood of becoming aggressive.
  • Make a list of the theories on the origins of aggression (evolutionary psychology, neurobiology, social learning theory, et cetera).
  • Also focus on the topic of media violence when studying this chapter.

  • When studying this chapter, do not focus too much on the information that is specifically related to the legal system of the United States. Instead, try to focus more on the reliability of eyewitness testimonies and the Stanford prison experiment. 

Chapter 13: How does social psychology relate to business?

  • When studying this chapter, make a list of all the key terms in the book and write down their definitions.

Chapter 14: How does social psychology relate to health and well-being?

  • For this chapter, primarily focus on the ways that stress affects human health and well-being.
  • Also focus on the different coping mechanisms and the fact that in one situation, they might be helpful, whereas in another, they might not be very helpful.
