Er worden in Nederland 76.000 volwassen patiënten op een IC-afdeling behandeld vanwege een stoornis van de vitale orgaansystemen. 80 procent van deze patiënten verlaat levend het ziekenhuis, maar het overleven van een acute of levensbedreigende ziekte kan ook negatieve gevolgen met zich meebrengen met betrekking tot de kwaliteit van leven. De vraag is of mensen er beter van worden wanneer zij een acute of langdurige levensbedreigende ziekte overleven met als gevolg dat hun kwaliteit van leven fors achteruit gaat. De afgelopen tijd is de kans op overleven van een levensbedreigende aandoening, zoals een trauma, sepsis of infectie verbeterd.
