Intro

Backpacking or travelling in the Czech Republic?

  • You probably know the Czech Republic from Prague and Pilsen… but it is much more than that! Whether you are exploring the mysterious forests of Bohemia, visiting ancient castles or exploring the peaks of the Giant Mountains, there is something for every type of traveller here. And besides being a good country for a car holiday, it is also ideal for backpackers with affordable prices and good public transport.
  • Activities to spot: discover classical Prague; visit Karlštejn Castle; walk through Bohemian Paradise; visit the medieval town of Český Krumlov; get spooky at the Kutná Hora Ossuary; experience the nightlife of Brno; drink beers at the Pilsen brewery; ski or hike in the Giant Mountains; relax in the lesser ale springs of Karlovy Vary.
  • Animal spotting: brown bear, mouflon, lynx, eagle owl, roe deer, fox, black stork, squirrel, bats.
  • Food spotting: svíčková, guláš, knedlíky, trdelník, koláče, bramboráky, rízek, hermelín.

Study in the Czech Republic?

  • Study cities: Prague, Brno, Ostrava.
  • Language: Czech, but many studies are also offered in English.

Internships in the Czech Republic?

  • Internships in the Czech Republic are popular, especially in sectors such as technology, tourism and media. It is a great opportunity to gain practical experience in an internationally oriented work environment.
  • Competencies: organizational skills, intercultural communication, dealing with different work cultures, language skills.

Volunteering in the Czech Republic?

  • In the Czech Republic you can work on eco projects, in agriculture, in hostels, in education and much more. Most work can be found through private individuals.

Working in the Czech Republic?

  • The Czech Republic is attractive to expats and international companies, partly due to its central location in the EU. As an expat you can work in the large tourism sector, especially if you speak German or English, in education or for multinational companies.

Working as a digital nomad in the Czech Republic?

  • The Czech Republic is becoming increasingly popular among digital nomads, especially Prague with its good internet and trendy cafés. The cost of living is lower than in Western Europe, and the cafés are perfect for remote work. The country also now offers digital nomad visas.
  • Favorite locations: Prague, Brno, Český Krumlov.

Living in the Czech Republic?

  • Living in the Czech Republic offers a high quality of life, a unique culture and relatively low costs. In addition, you can easily and quickly travel to many other countries in Europe. The cities are well organized, there is a lot of greenery, and the culture is lively and welcoming. Prague in particular attracts expats with its trendy city life and proximity to nature.
  • Education: There are several international schools, especially in Prague and Brno. The education system is good.
  • Expat community: Lively, friendly and very international. In the big cities you can find many expat events.
  • Safety: It is a very safe country, but petty crime does occur in the busy, touristy areas.
  • Culture: Czechs are proud of their culture, with traditional festivals, art and music. The country has a rich history and Czechs love their folklore. Coffee houses are an important social center, and beer is always nearby.
  • Note: Learning Czech can be quite a challenge, but sometimes necessary if you go outside the cities. Furthermore, the winters can be very cold.
  • Health insurance: The Czech Republic has institutions that provide good care, but make sure you have your own health insurance with good coverage.

Travel in Czech Republic?

  • Travel and vacation in the Czech Republic means the ideal combination of beautiful nature and ancient culture. Prague is a must, and Bohemia and the Sumava Mountains are definitely worth it. It is also (still) a cheap holiday destination where food and drinks are affordable.
  • Sumava is the largest mountain area that runs along the southwestern border of the Czech Republic. It is the largest nature reserve in all of Central Europe. The enormous untouched forests stretch over a length of 125 kilometers. There are five natural glacial lakes, the most important of which are Cerne and Gertovo Jezero.
  • Sunbathe on one of the sandy beaches or do water sports at the Lipno (reservoir) lake in the Bohemian Forest.
  • The Bohemian Paradise, called Cesky raj in Czech, is an attractive nature reserve with rugged rock formations and high mountains. The area extends from the edge of the Giant Mountains to the region of Central Bohemia. In the winter, you can go cross-country skiing and alpine skiing here.
  • A visit to Prague is synonymous with an overwhelming amount of art, culture, beauty and history. The castles and churches that can be found throughout the city take you back to the Middle Ages.
  • Olomouc is the city with the most monuments in the Czech Republic after Prague and can rightly call itself 'the pearl of the green cushion' of Moravia. This beautiful, historic city is located in the fertile Hana plain about 300 kilometers east of the capital. It can be divided into the upper square (Horni Namesti) with the old town hall from 1378 and the lower square (Dolni Namesti).
  • The spa town of Karlovy Vary is the largest and most famous spa town in the Czech Republic. It is beautifully situated in the hills of northwestern Bohemia. King Charles IV discovered the springs around 1350 during a deer hunt. At the time, he had a hunting lodge built so that he could take healing baths there himself. JoHorribles in the Czech Republic
  • Be prepared that the Czech food is fatty and very rich. If you are there for a longer period of time, you can try to alternate it with salads.
  • The Czechs are not very good at speaking other languages. Even in the big cities, an English-speaking Czech is a rarity. A dictionary or a travel guide is therefore useful.

From language courses to gap year abroad, from work experience to volunteering abroad, from paid work to internship abroad, from mountaineering to diving and from backpacking to travel around the world

What social activities can you do abroad?

    • Opportunities are found in the areas of helping, learning or studying. You can get involved to volunteer in a social project at a school in Africa, Asia or Latin America. You can get involved in nature, in a project with animals or cleaning the sea or beaches. Those who want to learn more can choose for example a language course in Latin America, Spain or South Africa.

What work related activities can you do abroad?

    • If you want to gain work experience, and/or also earn money, go and work abroad. You can combine backpacking in Australia with temporary work. You can work on campsites in Europe or bush camps in Africa. You can pretty much go all over the world to work in the hospitality industry, hotels and hostels, in the healthcare sector or for example at a diving school.

What sports activities to do abroad?

    • Have you ever thought of mountain biking, rafting (going down a wild river on a raft or rubber dinghy, climbing or canoeing), survival (which involves building rafts, climbing or canoeing), abseiling (descending a rock face while secured to ropes), zip-lining (whizzing down a cable), canyoning (starting at the top of a river and then climbing, swimming, diving down the bed) or caving (scrambling, wriggling and crawling through caves and crevices)?
    • Maybe you feel more comfortable on a bodyboard (on a half-wave surfboard, you surf the high waves lying down-with flippers), on a hang glider or while paragliding (with a parachute you float down a mountain or dune), hydrospeeding (on a bodyboard with flippers and a wetsuit on you go down a wild river via rapids) or Tiefschneeskiing (racing down through powder snow)?
