Backpacking or travelling in Kiribati?

  • Kiribati, pronounced Kiribass, is an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean with no less than 33 atolls spread over a vast area. Although it is not really a holiday destination, it is the destination for travellers who want to discover unspoilt islands and experience real, simple island life. No luxury resorts or busy tourist attractions here, as it is one of the poorest countries in the world, but peace, beautiful beaches and a close-knit community.
  • Activities to spot: explore the capital Tarawa; visit Betio and learn about WWII history; relax on the beaches of Abaiang; swim in the Blue Lagoon on Kiritimati; snorkel and dive; spot birds on Christmas Island; go to a traditional dance performance; eat fresh fish at the market; hike on Tabuaeran; admire the sunrise.
  • Animal spotting: giant manta rays, sea turtles, sooty terns, coconut crabs, sharks, parrotfish, whitetip reef sharks, bottlenose dolphins, hermit crabs.
  • Food spotting: fresh fish, coconut rice, breadfruit, taro, lobster, pandanus fruit, coconut water, palusami.
