Intro

Backpacking or travelling in Ukraine?

  • Ukraine offers a unique mix of Soviet nostalgia, modern cities, remote villages and beautiful nature. With cheap buses, retro night trains and plenty of cultural surprises around every corner, Ukraine will stay with you for a long time – just like the smell of garlic from all the borscht you eat along the way!
  • Spotting activities: wander through the labyrinth of Lviv; discover Kiev's enchanting Soviet mosaics; visit Chernobyl's ghost town of Pripyat; walk around Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle; hike through the Carpathian Mountains; descend into the underground tunnels in Kiev Pechersk Lavra.
  • Spotting animals: red deer, European lynx, black stork, wolf, brown bear, European hamster, crayfish.
  • Food Spotting: Borscht, Varenyky, Holubtsi, Banosh, Salo, Chicken Kiev, Deruny, Pampushky, Kefir, Medovik.

Study in Ukraine?

  • There are several universities to choose from, with varying degrees of quality. The most developed are medical and technical studies.
  • Study cities: Kiev, Lviv, Odessa, Kharkiv.
  • Language: Ukrainian or Russian, with more and more options in English.

Internship in Ukraine?

  • An internship in Ukraine can introduce you to the unique post-Soviet work culture and social work. There are opportunities in NGOs, tourism, cultural institutions and technical sectors.
  • Competencies: Intercultural communication, learning to navigate challenging situations, dealing with political influences, etc.

Volunteer in Ukraine?

  • Volunteer work is often focused on recovery and aid related to the war. For example, help with food distribution, reconstruction, humanitarian aid on the front lines, teaching English or at an animal shelter.

Working in Ukraine?

  • It is not necessarily easy to find work in Ukraine, especially now. The best opportunities are in IT, teaching English or with international organizations.
  • Work culture: fairly informal but with respect for hierarchy. Friendships at work are important, as are social gatherings.

Working as a digital nomad in Ukraine?

  • In quieter times, Ukraine had a growing scene for digital nomads, especially in cities like Kiev and Lviv. Costs are low, internet is fast and there are a few co-working spaces to meet other nomads.
  • Favorite locations: Kiev and Lviv.

Living in Ukraine?

  • Living in Ukraine can be a great experience for people who like a challenge. You can enjoy delicious food, make new friends and get to know the beautiful culture, but you also have to be able to deal with corruption and conflict situations.
  • Education: the choice of international schools is limited.
  • Safety: depends on the political situation, especially in the east of the country.
  • Culture: Ukrainian culture is warm and welcoming, with a strong emphasis on traditions and family. Be prepared for long meals and strong drinks.
  • Beware: the language barrier and complex bureaucracy can be difficult.
  • Health insurance: healthcare is accessible and cheap, but the quality can vary. For serious treatments it can be useful to go abroad, but in cities like Kiev healthcare is reasonably well organised. Make sure you have your own health insurance with good coverage.

Travel in Ukraine?

  • Ukraine is a country with a long history, old cities and beautiful beaches on the Black Sea. Furthermore, the (largely protected) landscape of Ukraine is still untouched with many forests and swamps.
  • Wine tasting in Crimea is a must-do in Ukraine. The vineyards of the area produce good quality wine, which you can taste on site quite cheaply.
  • A visit to a theater or opera in Lviv is a great experience. You will find several theaters in Lviv and especially the Opera House of Ivan Franko, which is one of the most beautiful theaters in Europe, is well worth a visit.
  • The locals in Kiev swim in the Dnieper in Kiev in the summer and in the winter everyone goes on the ice to fish in the holes.
  • Hiking tours are beautiful through the nature of the Carpathians. Recommended in both spring and summer.
  • Skiing and snowboarding is possible in the Carpathians in the winter. The major ski resorts are Bukovel, Slavsko, Drahobrat and Tysovets.
  • Cycling is becoming increasingly popular in Ukraine. Although the streets in the cities are not particularly bike-friendly, there are several parks and forests in and around Kiev where you can cycle fantastically and you can also make beautiful bike rides in the countryside. Do take a few weeks for a cycling holiday because it is often underestimated how incredibly large Ukraine is.
  • Odessa was originally the city of intellectuals, wealthy families and artists. Today it is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Ukraine. It is the place for a sun and beach holiday on the Black Sea, with all the advantages of a large city full of culture and nightlife.
  • A visit to Kiev will pleasantly surprise many people. Buildings in this city date back to the 11th century and Kiev is full of local art and architecture. All around you you see gilded arches and domes of cathedrals and monasteries. An impressive and pleasant street to walk through is the Andreevsky Spusk, one of the oldest streets in Kiev.
  • A city with lots of greenery and beautiful surroundings, that is Sevastopol. There is a lot to see in this city in the field of naval history, among other things. A boat trip through the harbor to see the Russian and Ukrainian naval ships is therefore an absolute must.
  • Yalta gained its fame through the 'Yalta Conference'. At the end of the Second World War, post-war Europe was divided during this 'Peace in the World' conference. The town is located on the Crimean peninsula, in the south of Ukraine. In Yalta you can visit one palace after another without it becoming boring. The Lividia Palace, the Alpuka Palace and the Massandra Palace are all impressive in different ways.
  • Explore Lviv, the city that is located in the foothills of the picturesque Carpathians and one of the oldest and most remarkable cities in Europe. Well worth seeing in Lviv are: the Market Square, the National Museum, the History Museum, the Art Gallery, the Museum of Ethnography and Crafts and the Pharmaceutical Museum.
  • Be prepared that hotels and hostels in Ukraine are known for having water that is either very hot or very cold. Try the water beforehand before you burn alive.
  • Wild camping is allowed in many places in Ukraine, but is not encouraged because of the risk of being robbed.
  • Street crime is common, especially in the big cities. Keep your valuables safe and never carry large amounts of money.
  • Try to stay away from protesting crowds. The atmosphere can change quickly.

From language courses to gap year abroad, from work experience to volunteering abroad, from paid work to internship abroad, from mountaineering to diving and from backpacking to travel around the world

What social activities can you do abroad?

    • Opportunities are found in the areas of helping, learning or studying. You can get involved to volunteer in a social project at a school in Africa, Asia or Latin America. You can get involved in nature, in a project with animals or cleaning the sea or beaches. Those who want to learn more can choose for example a language course in Latin America, Spain or South Africa.

What work related activities can you do abroad?

    • If you want to gain work experience, and/or also earn money, go and work abroad. You can combine backpacking in Australia with temporary work. You can work on campsites in Europe or bush camps in Africa. You can pretty much go all over the world to work in the hospitality industry, hotels and hostels, in the healthcare sector or for example at a diving school.

What sports activities to do abroad?

    • Have you ever thought of mountain biking, rafting (going down a wild river on a raft or rubber dinghy, climbing or canoeing), survival (which involves building rafts, climbing or canoeing), abseiling (descending a rock face while secured to ropes), zip-lining (whizzing down a cable), canyoning (starting at the top of a river and then climbing, swimming, diving down the bed) or caving (scrambling, wriggling and crawling through caves and crevices)?
    • Maybe you feel more comfortable on a bodyboard (on a half-wave surfboard, you surf the high waves lying down-with flippers), on a hang glider or while paragliding (with a parachute you float down a mountain or dune), hydrospeeding (on a bodyboard with flippers and a wetsuit on you go down a wild river via rapids) or Tiefschneeskiing (racing down through powder snow)?
