Intro

Backpacking or Traveling in Lithuania?

  • Lithuania, the largest of the Baltic States, has a fascinating mix of history, culture and nature. The country is known for its rye bread, Vilnius Old Town, unique language and beautiful landscapes. There is also something for every traveller - from luxury spa hotels to camping in the wild.
  • Activity Spotting: Explore Vilnius Old Town; visit Trakai Castle; discover the Curonian Split; taste local Baltic delicacies; explore Kaunas full of art and culture; hike the national parks; cycle along the Neman River; take a folkloric dance workshop; relax in the Baltic Sea.
  • Animal spotting: elk, bears, wolves, eagle owls, squirrels, hares, deer etc.
  • Food spotting: cepelinai, Šaltibarščiai, kugelis, skilandis, sakotis, mielės, rauginti kopūstai, Lithuanian honey.

Study in Lithuania?

  • Lithuania offers a wide range of study opportunities, with a growing number of international students.
  • Study cities: Vilnius, Kaunas.
  • Language: Lithuanian, but there are also more and more programs in English.

Internships in Lithuania?

  • There are various internship opportunities, especially in the technology, marketing and finance sectors.
  • Competencies: international communication, language skills, independence.

Volunteering in Lithuania?

  • There are mainly private individuals who offer volunteer work in exchange for room and board. For example, help around the house, on organic farms and in the tourism sector.

Working in Lithuania?

  • There are several jobs for expats in Lithuania. The country is one of the largest countries in Europe in the field of biotechnology, communication, mechatronics and IT so it can be interesting to look in those sectors and at international companies. There are also jobs for English teachers.

Working as a digital nomad in Lithuania?

  • Lithuania is popular for digital nomads. It is still reasonably cheap, there is an active start-up scene and the cities have all the facilities you need.
  • Favorite locations: Vilnius, Kaunas.

Living in Lithuania?

  • More and more people are moving to Lithuania, because of the interesting start-up scene, political stability, technology, relatively low costs and beautiful nature. So it can be a nice country to settle (for a while).
  • Education: there are good schools and international schools available, which makes it attractive for expat families.
  • Expat community: growing!
  • Safety: generally safe with low crime.
  • Please note: it can be useful (and fun!) to learn some basic Lithuanian phrases, the winters are cold and the salary is lower than in Western Europe in general. Also, people may not seem very warm and distant at first meeting, but once you get to know them better you can make good friends.
  • Healthcare: the healthcare system is well developed and offers public and private care. Health insurance is mandatory, so make sure you have your own health insurance with good coverage.

Travel in Lithuania?

  • This southernmost Baltic state on the Baltic Sea has a lot to offer for the enterprising traveler. You will find beautiful nature, but the city of Vilnius will also amaze you with its range of cultural institutions and entertainment venues. There is even a real artists' quarter where you can see the world's only statue of Frank Zappa.
  • The ideal place for sailing and winter surfing is in Nida, a town with beautiful white beaches.
  • Daredevils can make the highest bungee jump from a European tower from the TV tower in Vilnius.
  • During a walk through the Curonian Spit Park you will see a strange mix of dunes and coniferous forests with rare plants and animals.
  • To understand a little more about the Soviet period in Lithuania, there is the Gruto Parkas where Soviet statues and other remains from the Soviet period have been brought together. Some people don't like it because the park is a kind of playground of the Soviet period, but it is interesting.
  • Vilnius has the largest old city center in Europe, so you can enjoy old buildings, bars and squares (with churches). From the Gediminias Tower you have a beautiful view over the city. The university buildings are worth it if you can get in.
  • Kaunas is also called the city of museums with, among other things, the Devil Museum and castle ruins.
  • For relaxing on the beach you should go to Palanga, with beautiful white beaches and dunes.
  • The old capital of Lithuania (Trakai) is especially beautiful on the Galve lake. For a beautiful view over the lake and to the city you can walk to the island (there is a bridge) where the castle from the 14th century is located.

Activities abroad: home page

From language courses to gap year abroad, from work experience to volunteering abroad, from paid work to internship abroad, from mountaineering to diving and from backpacking to travel around the world

What social activities can you do abroad?

    • Opportunities are found in the areas of helping, learning or studying. You can get involved to volunteer in a social project at a school in Africa, Asia or Latin America. You can get involved in nature, in a project with animals or cleaning the sea or beaches. Those who want to learn more can choose for example a language course in Latin America, Spain or South Africa.

What work related activities can you do abroad?

    • If you want to gain work experience, and/or also earn money, go and work abroad. You can combine backpacking in Australia with temporary work. You can work on campsites in Europe or bush camps in Africa. You can pretty much go all over the world to work in the hospitality industry, hotels and hostels, in the healthcare sector or for example at a diving school.

What sports activities to do abroad?

    • Have you ever thought of mountain biking, rafting (going down a wild river on a raft or rubber dinghy, climbing or canoeing), survival (which involves building rafts, climbing or canoeing), abseiling (descending a rock face while secured to ropes), zip-lining (whizzing down a cable), canyoning (starting at the top of a river and then climbing, swimming, diving down the bed) or caving (scrambling, wriggling and crawling through caves and crevices)?
    • Maybe you feel more comfortable on a bodyboard (on a half-wave surfboard, you surf the high waves lying down-with flippers), on a hang glider or while paragliding (with a parachute you float down a mountain or dune), hydrospeeding (on a bodyboard with flippers and a wetsuit on you go down a wild river via rapids) or Tiefschneeskiing (racing down through powder snow)?
