In 2006 startte Nederland met invoeren van het desegregatiebeleid om de cultureel-etnische segregatie te voorkomen, de intergratie te bevorderen en achterstanden te bestrijden. Dit segregatiebeleid wordt ook gevoerd in de hele westerse wereld. Vrijwel overal wordt de cultureel-etnische segregatie in het onderwijs als een ongewenst fenomeen beschouwd, dat bestreden moet worden.
