Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is een vorm van gedragstherapie die zich richt op het accepteren van onaangename gedachten en gevoelens en het toewijden aan waardevol gedrag. ACT helpt mensen om te leven in het hier en nu, te vertrouwen op hun innerlijke kracht, en te doen wat belangrijk is voor hen.
Wat zijn de belangrijkste kenmerken van ACT?
- Acceptatie: Leren omgaan met onaangename gedachten en gevoelens zonder ze te veroordelen of te proberen te veranderen.
- Commitment: Actie ondernemen gericht op wat waardevol is in het leven, ondanks de obstakels die je tegenkomt.

Hoe wordt ACT in de praktijk toegepast?
ACT wordt toegepast door therapeuten in individuele en groepstherapie. De therapeut helpt de cliënt om de principes van ACT te begrijpen en toe te passen in zijn of haar eigen leven. Dit kan door middel van verschillende technieken, zoals:
- Oefeningen in mindfulness
- Experiëntiële oefeningen
- Metaforen
- Paradoxale interventies
- Waardenverduidelijking
Praktijkvoorbeeld
Een vrouw met angststoornis heeft last van paniekaanvallen. Ze vermijdt steeds meer situaties die haar angst kunnen triggeren. Door ACT leert ze om haar angst te accepteren en te ervaren zonder oordeel. Ze leert ook om haar waarden te verduidelijken en stappen te zetten in de richting van wat belangrijk is voor haar, ondanks haar angst.
Kritische kanttekeningen
- ACT is niet voor iedereen geschikt. Sommige mensen hebben moeite met het accepteren van hun onaangename gedachten en gevoelens.
- ACT is een relatief nieuwe therapievorm en er is nog niet veel onderzoek naar de effectiviteit ervan op de lange termijn.
- De kwaliteit van ACT-therapie kan sterk variëren, afhankelijk van de vaardigheden en ervaring van de therapeut.
