Een borderline persoonlijkheidsstoornis (BPS) is een complexe aandoening die iemands emoties, gedachten en gedrag beïnvloedt. Mensen met BPS ervaren vaak intense en onstabiele emoties, moeite met het reguleren van hun impulsen, en ongezonde patronen in relaties.
Wat zijn de belangrijkste symptomen van BPS?
- Emotionele instabiliteit: Mensen met BPS ervaren vaak intense en wisselende emoties. Ze kunnen binnen een korte periode van tijd van euforie naar woede naar verdriet gaan.
- Impulsiviteit: Mensen met BPS kunnen impulsief en roekeloos gedrag vertonen, zonder na te denken over de gevolgen. Dit kan leiden tot zelfbeschadiging, middelenmisbruik, onveilige seks of ander riskant gedrag.
- Moeilijkheden met relaties: Mensen met BPS hebben vaak moeite om gezonde en stabiele relaties te onderhouden. Ze kunnen intense en wisselende gevoelens over anderen hebben, en moeite hebben met grenzen stellen.
- Verstoord zelfbeeld: Mensen met BPS hebben vaak een verstoord zelfbeeld. Ze kunnen zich onzeker, waardeloos of leeg voelen.
- Chronische gevoelens van leegte: Mensen met BPS ervaren vaak chronische gevoelens van leegte en verveling.
- Angst voor verlating: Mensen met BPS hebben vaak een intense angst om in de steek gelaten te worden. Dit kan leiden tot clingy gedrag of wanhopige pogingen om anderen bij zich te houden.

BPS is een ernstige aandoening die een significante impact kan hebben op iemands leven. Het kan leiden tot problemen op het werk, in relaties en in het dagelijks leven.
Wat is de prevalentie van BPS in Nederland?
BPS komt voor bij ongeveer 2% van de Nederlandse bevolking. Het komt vaker voor bij vrouwen dan bij mannen.
Praktijkvoorbeeld
Een vrouw met BPS kan intense en wisselende emoties ervaren. Ze kan zich 's ochtends gelukkig voelen, maar 's middags alweer depressief. Ze kan impulsieve beslissingen nemen, zoals geld uitgeven dat ze niet heeft of seks hebben met iemand die ze niet kent. Ze kan ook moeite hebben om gezonde relaties te onderhouden. Ze kan bijvoorbeeld een intense band met haar partner hebben, maar hem de volgende dag alweer haten.
Wat is de behandeling van BPS?
BPS kan effectief worden behandeld met psychotherapie, medicatie of een combinatie van beide. Dialectische gedragstherapie (DGT) is een effectieve vorm van psychotherapie voor BPS. DGT helpt mensen met BPS om hun emoties te reguleren, hun impulsen te beheersen en gezonde relaties te ontwikkelen. Medicatie kan ook worden gebruikt om de symptomen van BPS te verminderen, zoals angst en depressie.
