Anorexia nervosa is een ernstige eetstoornis die gekenmerkt wordt door een obsessieve angst om aan te komen en een verstoord lichaamsbeeld. Mensen met anorexia nervosa eten te weinig, lijden aan extreem gewichtsverlies en hebben een vertekend beeld van hun lichaam.
Wat zijn de belangrijkste symptomen van anorexia nervosa?
- Beperkte voedselinname: Angst om te dik te worden, te weinig eten om gewicht te behouden of te verliezen.
- Intensieve lichaamsbeweging: Overmatige lichaamsbeweging, zelfs als men al mager is.
- Verstoord lichaamsbeeld: Zichzelf te dik zien, zelfs als men erg mager is.
- Ontkenning van ernst: Ontkenning van de ernst van de gezondheidsproblemen die gepaard gaan met anorexia.
- Andere symptomen: Depressie, angst, dwangmatigheid, isolement, slaapproblemen, hormonale disbalans.
Waarom is anorexia nervosa belangrijk?
Anorexia nervosa is een levensbedreigende aandoening. De lichamelijke gevolgen van ondervoeding kunnen leiden tot hartafwijkingen, botontkalking, orgaanfalen en zelfs de dood.
Prevalentie in Nederland
Ongeveer 0,3% van de Nederlandse vrouwen lijdt aan anorexia nervosa. De stoornis komt het meest voor bij tieners en jonge vrouwen, maar kan ook op latere leeftijd voorkomen.
Hoe werkt anorexia nervosa in de praktijk?
Mensen met anorexia nervosa hebben vaak een obsessieve focus op eten, gewicht en lichaamsbeweging. Ze kunnen extreem diëten, maaltijden overslaan, braken na het eten of laxeermiddelen gebruiken. Ze vermijden sociale situaties waar eten bij betrokken is en kunnen zich isoleren van familie en vrienden.
Praktijkvoorbeeld
Een 16-jarig meisje is altijd al slank geweest, maar begint ineens obsessief te diëten. Ze eet nauwelijks nog, sport urenlang per dag en is constant bezig met haar gewicht. Ze vermijdt sociale activiteiten en haar schoolprestaties gaan achteruit. Ze ziet zichzelf als dik, terwijl ze al ernstig ondervoed is.
Wat is de behandeling van anorexia nervosa?
De behandeling van anorexia nervosa is complex en vereist een multidisciplinaire aanpak. Behandeling kan bestaan uit:
- Psychotherapie: Cognitieve gedragstherapie (CGT) is een effectieve therapie bij anorexia nervosa. CGT helpt mensen om hun negatieve gedachtenpatronen te herkennen en te veranderen.
- Medicatie: Antidepressiva en antipsychotica kunnen worden gebruikt om symptomen als depressie, angst en dwangmatigheid te behandelen.
- Voedingsadvies: Een diëtist kan helpen om een gezond voedingspatroon te ontwikkelen en te herstellen van ondervoeding.
- Ondersteuning van familie en vrienden: Familie en vrienden kunnen een belangrijke rol spelen in de herstelproces.
Aandachtspunten
- Anorexia nervosa is een complexe aandoening met een wisselend beloop. Herstel kan lang duren en er is kans op terugval.
- Vroege diagnose en behandeling zijn belangrijk om de prognose te verbeteren.
- Behandeling moet altijd worden afgestemd op de individuele symptomen en behoeften van de patiënt.
- Stigma en onbegrip rondom eetstoornissen kunnen de behandeling bemoeilijken.
