Cognitieve gedragstherapie (CGT) is een vorm van psychotherapie die zich richt op het veranderen van negatieve gedachtenpatronen en gedragingen die leiden tot emotionele problemen.
Wat zijn de belangrijkste kenmerken van CGT?
- Focus op het heden: CGT richt zich op het hier en nu, in plaats van op het verleden of de toekomst.
- Leerproces: CGT is een leerproces, waarbij je nieuwe vaardigheden leert om met je problemen om te gaan.
- Actieve participatie: CGT is een actieve therapievorm, waarbij je zelf aan de slag gaat met oefeningen en opdrachten.
- Korte duur: CGT is doorgaans een kortdurende therapievorm, met 10 tot 20 sessies.
Waarom is CGT belangrijk?
CGT is een bewezen effectieve therapievorm voor een breed scala aan psychische problemen, waaronder:
- Angststoornissen
- Depressie
- Burn-out
- Obsessieve-compulsieve stoornis (OCS)
- Eetstoornissen
- Posttraumatische stressstoornis (PTSS)
Hoe wordt CGT in de praktijk toegepast?
CGT wordt doorgaans uitgevoerd door een psycholoog of psychotherapeut. Tijdens de therapie leer je:
- Je negatieve gedachtenpatronen te herkennen en te bevragen.
- Deze negatieve gedachten te vervangen door meer realistische en helpende gedachten.
- Gezond coping-gedrag te ontwikkelen.
Praktijkvoorbeeld
Stel, je hebt last van angst om te spreken in het openbaar. In CGT leer je dan om je negatieve gedachten over spreken in het openbaar te herkennen, zoals "Ik ga mezelf belachelijk maken" of "Iedereen gaat me uitlachen." Vervolgens leer je deze negatieve gedachten te vervangen door meer realistische gedachten, zoals "Ik kan dit" of "Mensen zullen me niet uitlachen." Je leert ook ontspanningsoefeningen en technieken om je angst te beheersen.
Kritische kanttekeningen
- CGT is niet voor iedereen geschikt. Sommige mensen hebben baat bij een andere vorm van therapie.
- CGT kan intensief zijn en huiswerkopdrachten vereisen.
- CGT is niet altijd een quick fix, en het kan even duren voordat je resultaat ziet.
