Gedrag verschilt per leeftijd en persoonlijkheidsvragenlijsten zouden deze ontwikkelingen moeten laten zien. De lexicale benadering ontwikkelt items aan de hand van een woordenboek, maar het woordenboek beschrijft vooral passieve persoonlijkheidskenmerken.
Beschrijving van het persoonlijkheidsdomein in de kindertijd
Een internationaal team is aan de slag gegaan om de persoonlijkheids domeinen in de kindertijd te beschrijven. Dit team was geïnteresseerd in wat er voorafging aan de ‘Big five’, welke gebruikt wordt om volwassenen te beschrijven. De onderzoeksteams uit alle landen gebruiken dezelfde gestandaardiseerde procedure. Ouders werd gevraagd wat ze karakteriserend vonden voor hun kind. Deze interviews werden verwerkt/gecodeerd.
Het kind werd uiteindelijk beschreven aan de hand van de volgende labels: onafhankelijk, volwassen voor de leeftijd, ziekte/handicaps/gezondheid, ritmisch, gepast gedrag voor het geslacht, fysieke aantrekkelijkheid, aanhankelijk gedrag, relaties met brusjes en ouders en een reserve categorie voor kinderen die niet goed geclassificeerd konden worden.
68% van de ouders refereerde naar ten minste vier kenmerken van de ‘Big five’.
Het doel was om een vragenlijst te ontwikkelen, waarin concrete observeerbare gedragingen voorkwamen.
Er werden eerst items geproduceerd voor kinderen tussen de acht en tien jaar. Dit ging volgens een bepaalde procedure en heeft uiteindelijk geleid tot 240 items voor de leeftijd 5 tot 7, 282 items voor de leeftijd 8 tot 10 en 234 items voor de leeftijd 11 tot 13.
Deze items werden voorgelegd aan ouders en leraren. Ze moesten antwoorden met de antwoordschalen; (1) bijna niet karakteriserend, (2) een beetje karakteriserend, (3) gemiddeld karakteriserend, (4) karakteriserend, en (5) erg karakteriserend.
Samenstellen van de domeinfactoren
De eerste domeinfactor in de kindertijd die is samengesteld is nauwkeurig/accuraat (conscientiousness) en bestaat uit streven naar prestatie, netheid, doorzettingsvermogen en concentratie.
De tweede domeinfactor in de kindertijd is gerelateerd aan ‘vriendelijkheid’ (agreeableness). Deze factor bestaat uit altruïsme, dominantie, egocentrisme, prikkelbaarheid en meegaandheid.
De derde domeinfactor in de kindertijd is extraversie en bestaat uit verlegenheid, expressiviteit, optimisme en energie.
De vierde domeinfactor in de kindertijd is verbeelding. Deze factor houdt in; creativiteit, nieuwsgierigheid en intellect.
De laatste factor is emotionele stabiliteit. Dit heeft te maken met zelfvertrouwen en angst.
De HiPIC
De HiPIC was eerst bedoeld als observator evaluatie instrument, maar wordt tegenwoordig ook voor zelfevaluaties gebruikt. De vindingen uit dit artikel laten zien dat de CBCL en de HiPIC overeenkomstige variantie hebben. De HiPIC is ook nuttig voor persoonsgerichte beschrijvende analyse.
Conclusies
De HiPIC kan beschouwd worden als de meest uitvoerige persoonlijkheidsvragenlijst voor het beoordelen van individuele verschillen in kinderen. Het instrument is breed inzetbaar. De 144 korte items zijn gegroepeerd in 18 facetten met een hiërarchische structuur van vijf brede domeinen. Het kost 15-20 minuten om in te vullen en hij kan ingevuld worden door ouders/leerkrachten en kinderen tussen de 12 en 15 jaar. De domeinen van de HiPIC zijn anders dan de componenten van de ‘Big five’, maar ze zijn er wel aan gerelateerd.
