Criminaliteit onder jongeren worden aantrekkelijk door de spanning, niet door de noodzaak ervan. Dit geldt zowel voor jongeren in de hoogte sociale klasse als voor jongeren in de ghetto. Een rode draad die door vandalisme, joyriding en winkeldiefstal loopt is dat de stiekeme criminaliteit (zorgt voor een gevoel van sensatie).Katz noemt deze vormen van criminaliteit ook wel sneaky thrills. Een sneaky thrill ontstaat als een persoon ten eerste de verleiding voelt om iets te doen dat afwijkt van de norm, ten tweede zijn/haar best doet om niet op te vallen en tot slot geniet van zijn/haar uitvoering.
Objecten verliezen meestal snel hun charme, wanneer ze eenmaal gestolen zijn. Het is de omgeving die ze in eerste instantie aantrekkelijk maakt, die roept de sensatie op die tot criminaliteit leidt, niet het product zelf. Zo weten winkeldieven meestal van tevoren niet wat ze willen hebben. Het kan ook zijn dat een object mensen helemaal opneemt, ze moeten het hebben en nemen het mee. Ook hierna verliest het object z'n charme.
De eerste stap naar sneaky thrills begint met de gedachte: “het kan zo makkelijk.” De spanning van de uitdaging wordt ervaren als een externe prikkel. Ergens in het proces van alle sneaky thrills beseft de dader dat hij/zij kalm moet blijven en niet op mag vallen tot een veilig punt (buiten de winkel bijvoorbeeld. Soms nemen de winkeldieven een bron mee om niet op te vallen, zoals een ouder. Het vermijden van argwaan is een uitdaging waarbij een dader zich veel bewuster is van zijn/haar gedrag. Hij/zij vraagt zich dingen af als hoelang staat een normale klant bij een product te kijken? Of lopen normale klanten de winkel uit met hoofd hoofd naar beneden of naar boven? Om normaal te lijken moet iemand de interactionele gebruiken bestuderen. De ervaring van sneaky thrills heeft meerdere emotionele pieken. Zo kan het onopgemerkt betreden van een winkel er al voor zorgen dat de dader weer rustig wordt, tot het moment dat hij/zij iets in haar tas stopt, en dan weer rustig wordt als het blijkt dat niemand het gezien heeft. Het derde stadium van sneaky thrills is de euforie als het gelukt is. Wat de daders vermijden, is de schaamte en vernedering als ze gepakt worden.
