Een psychose is een stoornis in de waarneming die ervoor zorgt dat iemand de realiteit anders ervaart dan die daadwerkelijk is. De symptomen van een psychose kunnen wanen, hallucinaties (zintuiglijke waarnemingen die er niet zijn) en verward denken omvatten.
Wat zijn de belangrijkste symptomen van een psychose?
- Positieve symptomen: Wanen (overtuigingen die niet in overeenstemming zijn met de realiteit), hallucinaties (waarnemen van dingen die er niet zijn), verward denken, onsamenhangende spraak.
- Negatieve symptomen: Verminderde expressie van emoties, gebrek aan motivatie, terugtrekking uit sociale contacten, verlies van interesse in activiteiten.
- Cognitieve symptomen: Problemen met geheugen, aandacht, concentratie en planning.
Waarom is een psychose belangrijk?
Een psychose kan een ernstige impact hebben op het leven van de patiënt en diens omgeving. Het kan leiden tot angst, verwarring, wantrouwen en sociale isolatie. De aandoening kan ook gevaarlijk zijn, wanneer de patiënt bijvoorbeeld handelt op basis van wanen.
Prevalentie in Nederland
Ongeveer 3% van de Nederlandse bevolking maakt in hun leven een psychose door. Dat komt neer op ongeveer 450.000 mensen. De aandoening kan op elke leeftijd optreden, maar komt het meest voor tussen de 16 en 35 jaar.
Hoe werkt een psychose in de praktijk?
De symptomen van een psychose kunnen variëren van persoon tot persoon en in ernst fluctueren. Sommige mensen ervaren slechts milde symptomen, terwijl anderen ernstige psychoses kunnen doormaken. De aandoening kan een grote impact hebben op het dagelijks leven van de patiënt, waardoor het moeilijk kan zijn om te werken, studeren, relaties te onderhouden en sociale activiteiten te ontplooien.
Praktijkvoorbeeld
Een vrouw met een psychose kan last krijgen van wanen dat haar buren haar afluisteren en haar willen vergiftigen. Ze kan hallucinaties zien, zoals kleine insecten die over haar lichaam kruipen. Door deze symptomen kan ze zich angstig en paranoïde voelen en zich terugtrekken uit sociale contacten. Dit kan leiden tot verlies van haar baan en sociale isolatie.
Wat is de behandeling van een psychose?
De behandeling van een psychose bestaat uit een combinatie van medicatie, psychotherapie en sociale revalidatie. Medicatie kan de symptomen van de aandoening onderdrukken en psychoses voorkomen. Psychotherapie kan de patiënt helpen omgaan met de symptomen, zijn vaardigheden te ontwikkelen en zijn kwaliteit van leven te verbeteren. Sociale revalidatie kan de patiënt helpen bij het vinden van werk, het onderhouden van relaties en het deelnemen aan sociale activiteiten.

- Vroege diagnose en behandeling zijn cruciaal om de prognose van de patiënt te verbeteren.
- Stigma en discriminatie rondom psychoses vormen een grote barrière voor hulpverlening en herstel.
- Familie en naasten van mensen met een psychose kunnen een belangrijke rol spelen in de ondersteuning en verzorging van de patiënt.
