Een bipolaire stoornis is een stemmingsstoornis die gekenmerkt wordt door extreme schommelingen in stemming, van manie (overdreven euforie) tot depressie (diepe somberheid). Deze stemmingswisselingen kunnen abrupt of geleidelijk optreden en variëren in ernst en duur.
Wat zijn de belangrijkste symptomen van een bipolaire stoornis?
Manie:
- Abnormaal opgewekt of euforisch
- Verhoogde energie en activiteit
- Verminderde behoefte aan slaap
- Praten, denken en handelen sneller dan normaal
- Impulsief en roekeloos gedrag
- Geïrriteerd en agressief
- Overdreven zelfvertrouwen
- Grandioze ideeën
Depressie:
- Somber en neerslachtig
- Verlies van interesse en plezier in activiteiten
- Verminderde energie en motivatie
- Slaapproblemen (te veel of te weinig)
- Veranderingen in eetlust en gewicht
- Moeilijkheden met concentreren en denken
- Gevoelens van hopeloosheid en schuld

Waarom is een bipolaire stoornis belangrijk?
Een bipolaire stoornis kan een ernstige impact hebben op iemands leven, relaties, werk en welzijn. De symptomen kunnen leiden tot verminderde productiviteit, sociale isolatie, financiële problemen en zelfs zelfmoord.
Prevalentie in Nederland
Ongeveer 1% van de Nederlandse bevolking heeft een bipolaire stoornis. De meeste mensen worden gediagnosticeerd tussen de 15 en 25 jaar.
Hoe werkt een bipolaire stoornis in de praktijk?
Mensen met een bipolaire stoornis ervaren periodes van manie, depressie en normale stemming. De frequentie en ernst van deze stemmingswisselingen kunnen per persoon variëren.
Praktijkvoorbeeld
Een student die normaal gesproken rustig en introvert is, begint ineens veel te praten, plannen te maken en impulsieve beslissingen te nemen. Hij slaapt nauwelijks, is overdreven optimistisch en geeft veel geld uit. Na een paar weken slaat de stemming om en wordt hij somber, lusteloos en slaapt hij te veel. Hij kan zich niet meer concentreren op zijn studie en heeft suïcidale gedachten.
Wat is de behandeling van een bipolaire stoornis?
Een bipolaire stoornis kan effectief worden behandeld met medicatie, psychotherapie en leefstijladviezen. Medicatie kan de stemmingswisselingen stabiliseren en het risico op terugval verminderen. Psychotherapie kan mensen helpen om hun symptomen te begrijpen en te leren omgaan met de uitdagingen van de stoornis.
Aandachtspunten
- Er is geen 'one size fits all' benadering voor de behandeling van een bipolaire stoornis. De behandeling moet worden afgestemd op de individuele symptomen en behoeften van de patiënt.
- Vroege diagnose en behandeling zijn belangrijk om de ernst van de symptomen te beperken en de prognose te verbeteren.
- Mensen met een bipolaire stoornis hebben vaak te maken met stigma en onbegrip. Het is belangrijk om voorlichting te geven over de stoornis en om mensen met bipolaire stoornis te ondersteunen.
