Pica is een zeldzame eetstoornis waarbij iemand zich gedwongen voelt om niet-eetbare stoffen te eten. Deze stoffen kunnen van alles zijn, zoals:
- Aarde, zand of klei
- Papier of karton
- Haar of nagels
- Stof of vuil
- Verf of schoonmaakmiddelen
- Metaal of hout
Het eten van deze stoffen kan ernstige gezondheidsproblemen veroorzaken, zoals:
- Verstoppingen of darmperforaties
- Infecties
- Vergiftiging
- Voedingstekorten
Pica komt vaker voor bij kinderen dan bij volwassenen. Het kan ook voorkomen bij mensen met een verstandelijke beperking of psychische aandoening.
Wat zijn de symptomen van pica?
Het belangrijkste symptoom van pica is het eten van niet-eetbare stoffen. Andere symptomen kunnen zijn:
- Buikpijn
- Verlies van eetlust
- Braken
- Diarree
- Verstopping
- Gewichtsverlies
- Prikkelbaarheid
- Moeheid
Waarom is pica belangrijk?
Pica is belangrijk omdat het kan leiden tot ernstige gezondheidsproblemen. Het is belangrijk om pica te behandelen om deze problemen te voorkomen.
Prevalentie in Nederland
De prevalentie van pica in Nederland is niet bekend. Er is geen onderzoek gedaan naar de prevalentie van pica in de algemene bevolking. Wel is er onderzoek gedaan naar de prevalentie van pica bij specifieke groepen, zoals mensen met een verstandelijke beperking. Uit dit onderzoek blijkt dat pica bij 10-30% van de mensen met een verstandelijke beperking voorkomt.
Hoe werkt pica in de praktijk?
Mensen met pica eten niet-eetbare stoffen om verschillende redenen. Sommige mensen eten deze stoffen omdat ze een tekort hebben aan bepaalde voedingsstoffen, zoals ijzer of zink. Anderen eten deze stoffen omdat ze een verstoorde zintuiglijke verwerking hebben. Weer anderen eten deze stoffen omdat ze emotionele problemen hebben, zoals stress of angst.
Praktijkvoorbeeld
Een kind met pica eet regelmatig aarde. Het kind heeft een tekort aan ijzer, waardoor het een verlangen heeft naar stoffen met een aardse smaak. De aarde bevat ijzer, waardoor het kind deze stof eet.
Wat is de behandeling van pica?
De behandeling van pica hangt af van de oorzaak van de stoornis:
Voedingstekort:
- Suppletie: Als pica wordt veroorzaakt door een tekort aan voedingsstoffen, zoals ijzer of zink, zal de arts supplementen voorschrijven om dit tekort te corrigeren. Dit kan helpen om de drang om niet-eetbare stoffen te eten te verminderen.
- Dieet: In sommige gevallen kan het dieet van de persoon ook worden aangepast om ervoor te zorgen dat ze alle voedingsstoffen binnenkrijgen die ze nodig hebben.
Verstoorde zintuiglijke verwerking:
- Sensorische integratietherapie: Deze therapie kan helpen om de zintuiglijke verwerking van de persoon te verbeteren. Dit kan hen helpen om beter te begrijpen en te reageren op sensorische informatie uit hun omgeving, wat de drang om niet-eetbare stoffen te eten kan verminderen.
