Psychopathie is een stoornis die zich kenmerkt door een afwezigheid van schuld, medelijden en empathie. Ze zijn niet gevoelig voor straf en zijn niet vang voor de negatieve consequenties van risicovol- of crimineel gedrag. Ze laten vaak ernstige agressie zien en er is een hoge criminele recidive.
Psychopathie en instrumentele agressie
Instrumentale agressie is gecontroleerd, doelbewust en wordt gebruikt om een gewild extern doel te behalen (geld of drugs). Naast het doel is schade aan anderen meestal secundair. Het wordt gedaan met voorbedachten rade en wordt niet vooraf gegaan met een sterke emotionele reactie, in tegenstelling tot reactieve agressie die deze elementen we heeft. Onderzoek heeft uitgewezen dat psychopathische criminelen meer aan instrumentale agressie doen en niet psychopathische criminelen aan reactieve agressie. Dit geldt vooral voor de wat zwaardere delicten (bijvoorbeeld aanranding). Psychopaten in vergelijking met niet psychopaten voelen geen emotionele opwinding tijdens hun misdaden. Uit een aantal studies is gebleken dat instrumentale agressie aanwezig is bij jongeren met psychopathische trekken, en resulteert mogelijk uit factoren van vroeg in het leven. Psychopathie kan worden verdeeld in twee kenmerken: het interpersoonlijke en affectieve deel en het impulsieve en antisociale deel. Het is ook mogelijk om deze weer op te delen in de volgende vier kenmerken: interpersoonlijk, affectief, impulsieve leefstijl en antisociaal. Er worden sterke relaties gevonden tussen interpersoonlijk/affectief en psychopathie. Reactieve agressie heeft vaak meer raakvlakken met impulsieve/antisociale kenmerken. Het uiteindelijke doel bij psychopaten is persoonlijk gewin.
Psychopathie als een evolutionaire strategie
Psychopathie is mogelijk een alternatieve evolutionaire strategie dat voornamelijk bestaat uit gedragingen om te misleiden/vals te spelen. Door middel van diefstal en verkrachting maken ze gebruik van anderen om status te krijgen of om hun genen door te geven met minimale moeite. Op lage frequentie zijn psychopaten in staat deze alternatieve evolutionaire strategie vol te houden. Om deze strategie succesvol vol te houden moet men aan waarschijnlijk aan de volgende kenmerken voldoen: (1) gebrek aan emoties die normaal moraal gedrag leiden, en (2) het beleven van plezier of beloning bij het pijn doen van anderen. Door het niet voelen van emoties bij immoreel gedrag voelen psychopaten zich ongehinderd in hun acties. Psychopaten worden gedreven om instrumenteel gedrag te laten zien door het plezier wat ze eraan beleven. Er is ook een link gevonden tussen sadistische persoonlijkheidstrekken en psychopathie.
De neurobiologie van psychopathie
Veel brain imaging studies hebben geprobeerd de neurale correlaten te ontdekken van morele besluitneming. Veel van de geïdentificeerde structuren zijn ook geassocieerd met psychopathie. De prefrontale cortex, met name de orbitofrontale regio, is belangrijk bij het begrijpen van emotionele staten bij anderen en het inhiberen van antisociale impulsen. Tijdens angst conditionering en een sociaal interactieve game vertoont dit gebied bij psychopaten minder activiteit. Vroege schade aan de orbitofrontale cortex leidt tot verschillende psychopathische kenmerken. In de prefrontale cortex wordt geen abnormale structuur of werking gevonden bij psychopaten of instrumentaal agressieve individuen.
In de studies werd de prefrontale cortex wel als geheel gemeten, er werd niet naar deelgebieden gekeken. De werking van de prefrontale cortex is juist goed bij psychopaten wat hen mogelijk helpt bij plannen van misdaden. Bij psychopaten wordt er een verkleinde amygdala gevonden en een verlaagde activiteit tijdens angst conditionering, het verwerken van emotionele stimuli, en tijdens een sociaal interactieve game. Hippocampale afwijkingen worden ook gevonden bij psychopaten. Dit kan leiden tot affect disregulatie en slechte contextuele angst conditionering. De hippocampus heeft connecties met de amygdala en de prefrontale cortex (beide betrokken bij psychopathie). Bij psychopaten wordt er ook een verminderde werking gevonden van de anterieure cingulate (emotionele verwerking), posterieure cingulate (herinneringen van emotionele herinneringen) en de angular gyrus/hoekige gyrus (complexe sociale cognitie). Daarnaast is er een vergoot corpus callosum gevonden bij psychopaten. De informatie overdracht van de ene hemisfeer naar de andere hemisfeer is langduriger dan bij niet psychopaten. Recent onderzoek denkt dat een verhoogde activiteit in het striatum (verwerking van beloning) ook bij psychopaten hoort.
