Travel in Italy

  • Belissimo Italia! Dive into Mediterranean life in Italy: delicious food, Italian wines, sun and sea (or Lake Garda). Imagine yourself back in Roman times in Rome and wander the streets of Venice and Florence, or go hiking or winter sports in the northern Italian Alps.
  • Hiking in the Italian Alps is breathtaking (literally and figuratively). In winter, the Italian Alps are popular winter sports destinations.
  • Climb the tower of Pisa. Pisa is sometimes terrifyingly touristy, but climbing Italy's most famous tower is still a beautiful experience.
  • Climb the Dome of the Vatican in Rome. St. Peter's Church is beautiful and very impressive, but climbing the narrow steps of the dome and then the view of Rome completes a visit to Vatican City.
  • Visit an opera in Verona. This can be a long sit (an opera can quietly last 4 hours), but just the effort Italians put into looking beautiful at a performance makes it worth it.
  • Relax at one of the popular lakes in northern Italy, such as Lake Garda, Lake Como or “Lago Magiore. Some campsites at these lakes can be overcrowded in the summer, but usually a smaller and quieter campsite can be found nearby.
  • JoHotspots in Italy
  • Rome is an absolute must-see. Nowhere can so many beautiful churches and historic buildings be found together. The Roman Forum, the Colosseum and the Palatine breathe history and you imagine yourself back in the time of the Romans.
  • The city of Venice is among the most visited places in Italy. The many canals, stately palaces, squares and absence of automobile traffic give the city its unique character. Except for a few buildings, medieval Venice is still completely intact. Be quick, because Venice is sinking and will flood!
  • Milan is city is the shopping mecca for many women. The city, with about 1.3 million inhabitants, is known for its elegance, fashion, architecture, scrumptious restaurants, soccer and sumptuous nightlife. It is one of the biggest fashion cities, all the important fashion designers have established boutiques here.
  • Saturnia Waterfalls: Also called the healthiest waterfalls in Italy. Healing sulfurous water of 37 degrees Celsius you get for free and for nothing in the southernmost tip of Tuscany. Because of the crowds, they are polluting, but if you look for a moment, you will find much cleaner and warmer water a little further on.
  • Lake Garda: Italy's largest lake - with a circumference of about 160 kilometers - is hugely popular with tourists. The deep blue water, oleanders, lemon trees and cypresses give Lake Garda its typical Italian character. Especially in the north of Italy near the lakes, it can be incredibly crowded in the summer (also with mosquitoes, by the way).
  • Italians can be quite hussle and fussmakers and this is reflected in traffic, among other things. Honking and tearing around is the most normal thing in the world, but for foreigners this can be quite impressive.

Activities abroad: home page

From language courses to gap year abroad, from work experience to volunteering abroad, from paid work to internship abroad, from mountaineering to diving and from backpacking to travel around the world

What social activities can you do abroad?

    • Opportunities are found in the areas of helping, learning or studying. You can get involved to volunteer in a social project at a school in Africa, Asia or Latin America. You can get involved in nature, in a project with animals or cleaning the sea or beaches. Those who want to learn more can choose for example a language course in Latin America, Spain or South Africa.

What work related activities can you do abroad?

    • If you want to gain work experience, and/or also earn money, go and work abroad. You can combine backpacking in Australia with temporary work. You can work on campsites in Europe or bush camps in Africa. You can pretty much go all over the world to work in the hospitality industry, hotels and hostels, in the healthcare sector or for example at a diving school.

What sports activities to do abroad?

    • Have you ever thought of mountain biking, rafting (going down a wild river on a raft or rubber dinghy, climbing or canoeing), survival (which involves building rafts, climbing or canoeing), abseiling (descending a rock face while secured to ropes), zip-lining (whizzing down a cable), canyoning (starting at the top of a river and then climbing, swimming, diving down the bed) or caving (scrambling, wriggling and crawling through caves and crevices)?
    • Maybe you feel more comfortable on a bodyboard (on a half-wave surfboard, you surf the high waves lying down-with flippers), on a hang glider or while paragliding (with a parachute you float down a mountain or dune), hydrospeeding (on a bodyboard with flippers and a wetsuit on you go down a wild river via rapids) or Tiefschneeskiing (racing down through powder snow)?
