Mensen denken vaak automatisch dat wanneer iemand ergens veel in heeft geïnvesteerd (tijd, geld, fysieke inzet, etc.) het resultaat ook beter zou moeten zijn. Des te groter de individuele investering, des te positiever het resultaat wordt gewaardeerd. Mensen gebruiken hierbij inzet als een heuristiek voor kwaliteit. Deze relatie tussen inzet en kwaliteit is echter imperfect en de heuristiek kan soms falen.

Bovenstaande is al door onderzoek bevestigd. Echter, daarbij is altijd gekeken naar de eigen inzet. Mensen hebben vaak meer waardering voor waar zij zich zelf veel voor hebben ingezet. Maar worden resultaten ook hoger gewaardeerd wanneer het een hoge inzet van een ander betreft? Tevens is hier gebruik gemaakt van de moderator ambiguïteit. Als inzet een heuristiek is voor kwaliteit, dan zou deze vaker worden gebruikt wanneer de kwaliteit moeilijk te beoordelen is (zoals vaak het geval is binnen de artistiek), en minder wanneer de kwaliteit van een object gemakkelijk te beoordelen is.
Discussie
Het bestaan van de effort-heuristiek wordt bevestigd. Inzetgebaseerde beoordelingen over kwaliteit worden vaak gemaakt. Des te hoger de waargenomen geïnvesteerde inzet, des te hoger de geschatte kwaliteit. Dit resultaat werd gevonden zowel voor subjectieve beoordeling als objectieve beoordeling van kwaliteit. Inzet wordt dus gebruikt voor het beoordelen van de kwaliteit van het werk van anderen.
