Metacognitieve therapie (MCT) is een vorm van therapie die zich richt op het veranderen van de manier waarop je denkt over je eigen gedachten. In tegenstelling tot klassieke cognitieve gedragstherapie (CBT), die zich richt op de inhoud van je gedachten, richt MCT zich op de metacognities, oftewel de overtuigingen die je hebt over je eigen denken.
Wat zijn de belangrijkste kenmerken van metacognitieve therapie?
- Focus op metacognities: MCT richt zich op de identificatie en uitdaging van disfunctionele metacognities, zoals "piekeren helpt me problemen op te lossen" of "ik kan mijn gedachten niet controleren".
- Experimentele houding: MCT benadrukt het belang van een experimentele houding ten opzichte van je gedachten. Je leert om je gedachten te bevragen en te testen in plaats van ze als waar aan te nemen.
- Loskoppeling van gedachten: MCT leert je om je los te koppelen van je gedachten. Je leert dat je niet je gedachten bent, en dat je een keuze hebt hoe je met je gedachten omgaat.
Waarom is metacognitieve therapie belangrijk?
MCT kan nuttig zijn voor mensen die last hebben van:
- Piekeren: MCT kan je helpen om de cirkel van piekeren te doorbreken en je te focussen op oplossingsgericht denken.
- Angststoornissen: MCT kan je helpen om je angstgedachten te relativeren en je angstreacties te verminderen.
- Depressie: MCT kan je helpen om negatieve gedachtenpatronen te doorbreken en je stemming te verbeteren.
Hoe wordt metacognitieve therapie in de praktijk toegepast?
Tijdens MCT leer je verschillende technieken, zoals:
- Identificatie van metacognities: Je leert om je eigen metacognities te herkennen en te benoemen.
- Uitdaging van metacognities: Je leert om je metacognities te bevragen en te testen op realiteit en nut.
- Ontwikkeling van gezondere metacognities: Je leert om gezondere en meer helpzame metacognities te ontwikkelen.
- Aandachtstraining: Je leert om je aandacht te richten op het hier en nu, in plaats van op je piekergedachten.
Praktijkvoorbeeld
Stel je voor dat je last hebt van angst om te spreken in het openbaar. Je hebt de metacognitie: "Als ik een presentatie geef, ga ik mezelf zeker belachelijk maken." Met MCT leer je om deze metacognitie te bevragen. Je vraagt jezelf af: "Is het altijd waar dat ik mezelf belachelijk maak als ik een presentatie geef? Wat zijn de bewijzen voor en tegen deze gedachte?" Door je metacognitie te bevragen, kun je deze relativeren en je angst verminderen.
Kritische kanttekeningen
- Relatief nieuwe therapie: MCT is een relatief nieuwe therapievorm en er is nog niet veel onderzoek naar de langetermijneffecten.
- Vereist motivatie en oefening: MCT is geen wondermiddel en vereist motivatie en oefening om succesvol te zijn.
- Niet geschikt voor iedereen: MCT is mogelijk niet geschikt voor mensen met ernstige psychische problemen.
