De Utrechtse Burn-Out Schaal (UBOS) is een beoordelingsinstrument dat wordt gebruikt om de mate van burn-out bij werknemers te meten. De schaal bestaat uit 15 items die verdeeld zijn over drie subschalen:
- Emotionele Uitputting (E): Het gevoel helemaal 'op' of 'leeg' te zijn als gevolg van het werk.
- Mentale Distantie (D): Een cynische, afstandelijke en weinig betrokken houding tegenover de eigen werkzaamheden.
- Competentie (C): In hoeverre voelt men zich in staat om zijn werk goed te doen.
Wat zijn de belangrijkste kenmerken van de Utrechtse Burn-Out Schaal?
- Kort en gestructureerd: De UBOS kan in 10-15 minuten worden afgenomen, waardoor het een efficiënt hulpmiddel is voor onderzoek en klinische praktijk.
- Betrouwbaar en valide: De UBOS heeft aangetoond betrouwbaar en valide te zijn in tal van studies.
- Gevoelig voor verandering: De UBOS kan worden gebruikt om veranderingen in de mate van burn-out in de loop van de tijd te volgen.
- Gebruiksvriendelijk: De schaal is duidelijk en eenvoudig te begrijpen voor zowel werknemers als onderzoekers.
- Beschikbaar in meerdere talen: De UBOS is beschikbaar in het Nederlands, Engels, Duits en Frans.
Waarom is de Utrechtse Burn-Out Schaal belangrijk?
De UBOS is een belangrijk hulpmiddel voor:
- Identificatie van burn-out: De UBOS kan worden gebruikt om te identificeren of een werknemer burn-outklachten heeft.
- Beoordeling van de ernst van burn-out: De UBOS kan worden gebruikt om de ernst van de burn-outklachten van een werknemer te beoordelen.
- Behandelingsplanning: De informatie verkregen van de UBOS kan worden gebruikt om een behandelplan op maat op te stellen.
- Vervolgbeoordeling: De UBOS kan worden gebruikt om de voortgang van een werknemer met burn-outklachten te volgen tijdens de behandeling.
- Onderzoek: De UBOS kan worden gebruikt om gegevens te verzamelen over burn-out bij werknemers voor onderzoeksdoeleinden.
Hoe wordt de Utrechtse Burn-Out Schaal in de praktijk toegepast?
De UBOS kan worden afgenomen door een professional, zoals een arboarts, bedrijfsarts of psycholoog, maar ook door de werknemer zelf. De vragenlijst kan worden ingevuld op papier of online.
Praktijkvoorbeeld
Een 42-jarige werknemer klaagt bij zijn bedrijfsarts over vermoeidheid, prikkelbaarheid en concentratieproblemen. Hij heeft ook het gevoel dat zijn werk niet meer zinvol is. De bedrijfsarts neemt de UBOS af bij de werknemer en de resultaten bevestigen de diagnose burn-out. De bedrijfsarts bespreekt met de werknemer de verschillende behandelmogelijkheden en stelt een behandelplan op dat cognitieve gedragstherapie (CBT) en stressmanagement omvat. De UBOS wordt regelmatig afgenomen bij de werknemer om zijn voortgang te volgen en het behandelplan indien nodig aan te passen.
Kritische kanttekeningen
Hoewel de UBOS een waardevol hulpmiddel is, zijn er enkele kritische kanttekeningen waarmee rekening moet worden gehouden:
- De UBOS is een zelfbeoordelingslijst: De antwoorden op de vragen van de UBOS kunnen beïnvloed worden door de stemming en motivatie van de werknemer.
- De UBOS is niet geschikt voor alle werknemers: De UBOS is niet geschikt voor werknemers met een co-morbide psychiatrische stoornis of voor werknemers met een verstandelijke beperking.
- De UBOS geeft geen compleet beeld: De UBOS geeft slechts een indicatie van burn-out. Voor een complete diagnose is aanvullend onderzoek nodig.
