Frenologie is een verouderde pseudowetenschap die beweert dat de vorm van de schedel informatie geeft over de persoonlijkheid, karaktereigenschappen en mentale vermogens van een individu. Deze leer werd in de vroege 19e eeuw ontwikkeld door Franz Joseph Gall en Johann Caspar Spurzheim.
Frenologen verdeelden de schedel in zones die elk geassocieerd werden met een specifieke mentale faculteit of karaktereigenschap. Door de schedel te palperen (betasten), dachten frenologen de ontwikkeling van deze zones te kunnen beoordelen en hieruit afleidingen te kunnen maken over de persoonlijkheid van het individu.
Wat zijn de belangrijkste kenmerken van frenologie?
- Toewijzing van mentale functies aan hersendelen: Frenologie was gebaseerd op de onjuiste aanname dat specifieke mentale functies gelokaliseerd zijn in specifieke delen van de hersenen.
- Gebruik van schedelvorm voor karakterbeoordeling: Frenologen geloofden dat de vorm van de schedel een afspiegeling was van de ontwikkeling van de onderliggende hersengebieden, en gebruikten deze informatie om karaktereigenschappen te beoordelen.
- Populariteit in de 19e eeuw: Frenologie was in de 19e eeuw enorm populair, en werd gebruikt voor diverse doeleinden, waaronder beroepskeuzebegeleiding, onderwijs en de behandeling van geestesziekten.
Waarom was frenologie belangrijk?

De frenoloog bevoelt de schedel van het kind en concludeert dat het kind een gebrek heeft aan "zelfbeheersing" en "discipline". De frenoloog adviseert de ouder om het kind strenger te disciplineren en extra aandacht te besteden aan de ontwikkeling van deze gebieden.
Kritische kanttekeningen
Frenologie is inmiddels verlaten als wetenschappelijke discipline vanwege een aantal kritische kanttekeningen:
- Geen wetenschappelijke basis: De theorieën van frenologie waren niet gebaseerd op wetenschappelijk onderzoek en werden niet ondersteund door empirisch bewijs.
- Onjuiste aannames over de hersenen: Frenologie was gebaseerd op onjuiste aannames over de lokalisatie van mentale functies in de hersenen.
- Discriminerende toepassingen: Frenologie werd soms gebruikt om raciale en seksuele stereotypen te rechtvaardigen.
