Intro

Backpacking or traveling in Bosnia Herzegovina?

  • Many people still think that you should avoid this country, good for you! Because nothing could be further from the truth, this country has a lot to offer and that without the mass tourism in some other parts of Europe. Think of historic cities, breathtaking nature and an interesting mix of Eastern mysticism and European comforts. Okay, maybe you have to watch out for landmines, but otherwise it is generally just like the rest of Europe.
  • Spotting activities: walk through historic Sarajevo; jump in the Neretva river in Mostar; admire the Kravica waterfalls; visit the Blagaj Tekija monastery; go on a rafting adventure in Una National Park; explore the medieval Jajce; swim in the Adriatic Sea in Neum; relax in the salt lakes of Tuzla.
  • Spotting animals: Balkan lynx, brown bear, wolf, eagles, chamois.
  • Food spotting: Ćevapi, burek, sarma, klepe, tufahija, baklava, pita, Bosnian coffee.

Studying in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

  • There are many universities and courses to choose from. Interesting short programs that you can follow are for example focused on the turbulent history and peace and conflict resolution or energy and management of natural resources and sustainable energy.
  • Study cities: Sarajevo, Mostar, Banja Luka.
  • Language: Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian, but there are many programs in English.

Internships in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

  • There are opportunities in various sectors, from NGOs to companies in the tourism and IT sector.
  • Competencies: cultural sensitivity, project management, language skills, technological skills, interpersonal communication.

Volunteering in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

  • There are some full-time volunteer opportunities in community development or with private individuals in for example hostels, farms, tourism or just in people's homes.

Working in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

  • Most expats work for NGOs, in the diplomatic sector, as experts in industries or as English teachers.

Working as a digital nomad in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

  • It is an emerging destination for digital nomads due to its affordable cost of living and beautiful surroundings. Also, the internet is generally reliable and you can find some co-working spaces.
  • Favorite locations: Sarajevo, Mostar, Banja Luka.

Living in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

  • Living in Bosnia and Herzegovina offers an affordable and culturally rich experience. The cost of living is lower than in many other European countries, and the people are welcoming and friendly.
  • Why or why not? The cost of living is low, the people are welcoming and the nature is breathtaking, but job opportunities are limited, the infrastructure can be underdeveloped and the language barrier can be a challenge.
  • Education: There are good schools, including limited options for international schools.
  • Expat community: Small but growing.
  • Health insurance: generally good, but it can vary by area. Make sure you have your own good health insurance.

Bosnia and Herzegovina: Updates & Travel

Bosnia and Herzegovina: Updates & Travel

Travel in Bosnia and Herzegovina?

  • Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country with the freedom of the West, a Mediterranean lifestyle and Eastern hospitality. The former part of Yugoslavia is a safe country after the civil war and genocide, also for tourists. The country is rich in beautiful mountain landscapes and a special mix of culture. This is reflected in the street scene, the food and the costumes.
  • Sarajevo: Until recently, Sarajevo was associated with war. Today, the historic capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina is a lot more peaceful and attracts many tourists. For example, visit the Latin Bridge - the place where Franz Ferdinand was assassinated at the beginning of the First World War.
  • Astonishing beauty: One of the most beautiful sights in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the Kravica Waterfall, which is located on the Trebižat River. The water of the river that flows from the forests falls into a turquoise pool. In the Sutjeska National Park you will find one of Europe's remaining primeval forests.
  • Adrenaline overload: Bosnia-Herzegovina is a fantastic place for river sports and one of the best locations for whitewater rafting in Europe. In the popular city of Bihać you can go rafting and canoeing on the Una River all year round.
  • In 1984, the Winter Olympics were held in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Not surprising because the slopes are beautiful and it is a lot cheaper here than at the more famous ski destinations. On the Jahorina, the second largest mountain in Bosnia, there are several slopes, for beginners and advanced.
  • For culture lovers, Mostar is not to be missed. In this capital of the Herzegovina region you will find old Ottoman architecture such as Stari Most, the sixteenth-century bridge that forms an arch over the Neretva River. There are a number of mosques around the bridge. The oldest and holiest in the area is the Karadoz-Bey mosque. JoHotspots Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Neum: Very popular with tourists because of the beautiful beaches. There are many hotels on the coast, so the prices are not that high.
  • Vlasic: In the heart of Bosnia and Herzegovina lies the large mountain Vlasic, which attracts many tourists in the winter. The mountain is close to the city of Zenica and is 1,260 meters high.
  • Medjudorje: According to stories, several people have seen Mary in this city. That is why the city has become a place of pilgrimage for Catholics since 1981.
  • In Tesanj is the oldest castle in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
  • Tuzla is a city in the northeast of Bosnia and Herzegovina and is the center of culture of the region. Tuzla is especially known for its famous painters, writers and theaters.
  • Be aware that when you travel to Bosnia and Herzegovina by car, stay on the road, because there are still landmines.
  • Watch out for pickpockets on the trams of Sarajevo. Driving fast is very normal, and a line on the road is not sacred. So pay attention!

From language courses to gap year abroad, from work experience to volunteering abroad, from paid work to internship abroad, from mountaineering to diving and from backpacking to travel around the world

What social activities can you do abroad?

    • Opportunities are found in the areas of helping, learning or studying. You can get involved to volunteer in a social project at a school in Africa, Asia or Latin America. You can get involved in nature, in a project with animals or cleaning the sea or beaches. Those who want to learn more can choose for example a language course in Latin America, Spain or South Africa.

What work related activities can you do abroad?

    • If you want to gain work experience, and/or also earn money, go and work abroad. You can combine backpacking in Australia with temporary work. You can work on campsites in Europe or bush camps in Africa. You can pretty much go all over the world to work in the hospitality industry, hotels and hostels, in the healthcare sector or for example at a diving school.

What sports activities to do abroad?

    • Have you ever thought of mountain biking, rafting (going down a wild river on a raft or rubber dinghy, climbing or canoeing), survival (which involves building rafts, climbing or canoeing), abseiling (descending a rock face while secured to ropes), zip-lining (whizzing down a cable), canyoning (starting at the top of a river and then climbing, swimming, diving down the bed) or caving (scrambling, wriggling and crawling through caves and crevices)?
    • Maybe you feel more comfortable on a bodyboard (on a half-wave surfboard, you surf the high waves lying down-with flippers), on a hang glider or while paragliding (with a parachute you float down a mountain or dune), hydrospeeding (on a bodyboard with flippers and a wetsuit on you go down a wild river via rapids) or Tiefschneeskiing (racing down through powder snow)?
