Het GROW model is een eenvoudig en krachtig coachingmodel dat helpt om doelen te stellen, belemmeringen te identificeren en een plan van aanpak te ontwikkelen. De afkorting GROW staat voor:
- Goal (Doel): Wat wil je bereiken?
- Reality (Realiteit): Wat is je huidige situatie?
- Options (Opties): Wat zijn je mogelijkheden?
- Will (Wil): Wat ga je doen?
Wat zijn de belangrijkste kenmerken van het GROW model?
- Eenvoudig te gebruiken: Het GROW model is gemakkelijk te begrijpen en te gebruiken, waardoor het toegankelijk is voor iedereen.
- Gestructureerd: Het model biedt een duidelijke structuur voor coachinggesprekken, waardoor deze efficiënter en effectiever verlopen.
- Doelgericht: Het GROW model helpt om te focussen op het behalen van concrete doelen.
- Flexibel: Het model kan worden aangepast aan de individuele behoeften van de coachee.
Waarom is het GROW model belangrijk?
- Helpt bij het stellen van SMARTe doelen: Het GROW model helpt om doelen te stellen die Specifiek, Meetbaar, Acceptabel, Realistisch en Tijdgebonden zijn.
- Verhoogt zelfbewustzijn: Door te reflecteren op de realiteit en de opties, wordt de coachee zich meer bewust van zijn eigen capaciteiten en belemmeringen.
- Stimuleert zelfverantwoordelijkheid: Het GROW model helpt de coachee om zelf verantwoordelijkheid te nemen voor zijn eigen ontwikkeling.
- Verbetert de prestaties: Door het stellen van doelen, het ontwikkelen van een plan van aanpak en het nemen van verantwoordelijkheid, kunnen de prestaties van de coachee worden verbeterd.
Hoe wordt het GROW model in de praktijk toegepast?
Het GROW model kan in verschillende settings worden toegepast, waaronder:
- Coaching: Het GROW model is een kerninstrument in coachingstrajecten.
- Mentoring: Mentoren kunnen het GROW model gebruiken om hun mentees te begeleiden bij hun ontwikkeling.
- Leiderschapsontwikkeling: Het GROW model kan worden gebruikt om leiders te helpen hun doelen te behalen en hun team te ontwikkelen.

Een manager wil graag een teamlid helpen om zijn of haar presentatievaardigheden te verbeteren. De manager kan het GROW model gebruiken als volgt:
- Goal (Doel): Wat wil het teamlid bereiken met zijn of haar presentaties?
- Reality (Realiteit): Wat zijn de sterke en zwakke punten van het teamlid op het gebied van presenteren?
- Options (Opties): Wat zijn de mogelijkheden om de presentatievaardigheden van het teamlid te verbeteren?
- Will (Wil): Wat gaat het teamlid doen om zijn of haar presentatievaardigheden te verbeteren?
Kritische kanttekeningen
- Het GROW model is geen tovermiddel: Het model is een hulpmiddel, maar het is geen garantie voor succes.
- De coach/mentor/leidinggevende moet vaardig zijn in het gebruik van het model: Het is belangrijk dat de coach/mentor/leidinggevende de juiste vragen stelt en de coachee op een respectvolle manier begeleidt.
- Het model is niet altijd geschikt: Het GROW model is wellicht niet geschikt voor alle situaties. In sommige gevallen kan een andere aanpak meer effectief zijn.
