International ervaring van studenten zorgt niet altijd voor verbeterde interculturele competentie.
-> snel weer terug in de eigen omgeving waar ze hun opgedane ervaring weer wegstoppen.
Studenten blijven vaak in hun eigen groep, alleen interactie met mensen met dezelfde taal en culturele achtergrond.
Intercultural competence: de bekwaamheid te shiften van cultureel perspectief en op de juiste wijze gedrag aan te passen aan culturele verschillen en gemeenschappelijkheden.
Intercultureel/global mindset is effectiever voor succesvolle interculturele communicatie in onbekende taal en cultuur omgevingen.
Intercultural Development Continuum (IDC): men ontwikkelt zich van een etnocentrische stage door Minimization naar een meer etnorelatieve stage van ontwikkeling, tegelijk met het ontwikkelen van intercultural competence.
-> individu ontwikkelt zich niet noodzakelijk van de ene stage naar de andere. Negatieve ervaringen kunnen hier een stokje voor steken.
Experiental learning cycle: leerling heeft een concrete ervaring, reflecteert op deze ervaring, doet mee aan abstract denken, experimenteert actief en krijgt hierdoor begrip van deze ervaring.
Contacthypothese: door contact kan de relatie verbeteren tussen twee groepen
-> hoeft niet per se zo te zijn, kan de relatie ook juist verslechteren
Conclusie
- toenemende participatie in het participatie van onderwijs in het buitenland is goed, maar er is meer inspanning nodig om de potentie van de internationale onderwijs ervaring te optimaliseren.
- study abroad interventies met gemengde groepen werken goed
- interculturele communicatie cursussen hebben voordelen voor zowel lokale als internationale studenten
- individuele interculturele docenten kunnen een significant verschil maken in het intercultureel leren van de educatie van buitenlandse studenten.
