Groeiprocessen
Groei is een relatief begrip. Zo is in verhouding het hoofd van een baby groter dan dat van een volwassene. Een embryo heeft 2 biljoen cellen. Zo'n cel deelt 80 tot 100 keer en sterft daarna af. Proliferatie is niet genoeg om een embryo te creëren → naast celdeling kan een cel een aantal andere processen ondergaan:
- Migratie (verplaatsing)
- Differentiatie (verandering van celtype, vormverandering)
- Differentiële groei (verschil in delingssnelheid)
- O.a. door inductie
- Apoptose (geprogrammeerde celdood)
Groei vanuit een ander oogpunt
Een embryo groeit niet in alle opzichten, hiervan zijn enkele voorbeelden:
- Sommige structuren worden weer verwijderd
- Bijv. de buis van Wolff/Müller
- Soms deelt een embryo wel maar groeit hij niet
- Bijv. klievingsdelingen
- Structuren kunnen hoeven niet altijd te groeien in grootte, maar kunnen ook groeien in vorm
- Bijv. kromming van de neurale buis
- Structuren kunnen ook groeien in functie
- Bijv. de nieren: een mens wordt geboren met het aantal nefronen dat het gaat hebben, maar de functie moet nog ontstaan
- Ook blijft de plek van de nieren hetzelfde → alleen omdat het embryo caudaal verder groeit komen de nieren meer naar beneden in het lichaam te liggen

- De thymus was voor de geboorte groter → de piek van T-cellen zit vlak voor de geboorte
- De thymus is een orgaan dat op het hart ligt
- T-cellen herkennen alle eiwitten die mogelijk zijn, zelfs lichaamseigen eiwitten
- Dit verandert voor de geboorte.
- Een foetus heeft een fysiologische navelbreuk, waar de dunne en dikke darm in liggen → de abdominale wand wordt hieromheen getrokken
- Als een foetus na de geboorte een daadwerkelijke navelbreuk heeft ligt een deel van de darmen buiten de peritoneaalholte
Het kan helpen het college van maag-darmontwikkeling uit het blok van Mens tot Cel opnieuw door te nemen.
