Het beschrijven en herkennen van stoppen met criminaliteit is problematisch. In dit artikel worden stoppers in twee subgroepen onderverdeeld: De eerste groep bestaat uit jongeren die werden gearresteerd (7 tot 17 jaar) voor niet gewelddadige criminaliteit en die hierna niet werden gearresteerd voor roofzuchtige criminaliteit (als volwassenen). De tweede groep heeft wel roofzuchtige daden begaan in hun jeugd, maar als volwassenen (21+) niet meer. Deze twee groepen worden met elkaar vergeleken om te kijken of er een verschil is in het stoppen op basis van type criminaliteit. In het hoofdstuk wordt verder een levensgeschiedenis beschreven van een man die op jonge leeftijd meerdere malen is gearresteerd, maar na de ontmoeting met zijn vrouw, op 17-jarige leeftijd, een keerpunt vond en is gestopt.
In het tweede hoofdstuk worden mensen beschreven die het criminele gedrag blijven volhouden. Dit volhouden wordt gedefinieerd als gearresteerd worden in verschillende fases van het leven. Ook hier worden de volhouders in twee groepen geplaatst. De eerste groep is in elke fase van het leven gearresteerd, jeugd (7 – 17 jaar), jong volwassen (17 – 32 jaar), en volwassen (32 – 70 jaar), waaronder onder andere voor gewelddadige criminaliteit. De tweede groep is ook in elke levensfase gearresteerd, maar dan op z'n minst in twee van de drie levensfasen voor gewelddadige criminaliteit. Ook in dit hoofdstuk wordt een levensgeschiedenis beschreven van een volhouder, ter illustratie. In het vorige hoofdstuk worden sterke banden met een baan, een wederhelft of een succesvolle tijd in militaire dienst geassocieerd met het stoppen met criminaliteit. Geen van deze drie was significant aanwezig in het leven van de man beschreven in hoofdstuk 2.
