De meesten hebben geen ervaring met criminaliteit en verkrijgen hun informatie uit verhalen van anderen en uit de media. Verhalen over incidenten hebben consequenties voor de oordelen over het als zodanig gepresenteerde slachtoffer en de dader. In het artikel wordt een model besproken dat individuele reacties op berichten in kaart brengt. Het ketn vier mogelijke processen en de daarmee gepaard gaande reacties op berichten over incidenten.
Informatie over incidenten: framing en sociale constructie
Het artikel bouwt voort op de framingtheorie en het sociale-constructieperspectief. Deze theorieën gaan als volgt:
Framingtheorie: Framing houdt in dat hoe iets gepresenteerd wordt, invloed heeft op oordelen en keuzes over een onderwerp. Het brengt de essentie van een onderwerp naar voren en daarmee de oplossing/aanpak. Een frame geeft dus richting.
Sociale-constructieperspectief: begrippen staan niet vast, ze verdwijnen of worden geïntroduceerd. Ze zijn afhankelijk van de context, tijd en plaats en bijvoorbeeld ook van hoe een fenomeen geframed wordt.
Model: informatie over incidenten en de gevolgen daarvan
Eerst wordt er een figuur besproken waarin de reacties van mensen op incidenten, crimineel of niet, wordt beschreven. Het is een vicieuze cirkel. Incidenten hebben invloed op verhalen over incidenten. Mediatoren van deze relatie zijn mediaframing en selectiviteit. Dan hebben verhalen over incidenten invloed op sociale vergelijkingsprocessen, deze worden hieronder besproken. Sociale vergelijkingsprocessen hebben weer invloed op de reacties ten aanzien van de dader, het slachtoffer, de politie enzovoorts en deze reacties hebben weer invloed op incidenten.
Om de reacties te begrijpen , is de sociale vergelijkingstheorie relevant. Deze stelt dat mensen zich op de volgende manieren kunnen vergelijken met anderen:
Opwaarts: met anderen die beter af zijn op de vergelijkingsdimensie.
Neerwaarts: op de vergelijkingsdimensie is de ander slechter af.
Identificeren: iemand voelt zich verwant aan de ander of kan de situatie van de ander als mogelijke situatie voor zichzelf zien.
Contrasteren: het niet kunnen identificeren met de ander.
Mensen kunnen zich op vier manieren contrasteren dan wel identificeren met een slachtoffer en/of dader. De vier verschillende processen worden hieronder beschreven:
Identificatie met slachtoffer en contrast met dader. De dader wordt gezien als heel anders dan zichzelf. Niet meer menselijk, een monster. Het slachtoffer is zogenaamd een ideaal slachtoffer, hij/zij wordt direct als slachtoffer (h)erkend. Dit ideale slachtoffer is kwetsbaar, voerde een respectabele activiteit uit en bevond zich op een plek waarvan het hem/haar niet kwalijk genomen kan worden dat hij/zij daar was. Er is dus op geen enkele manier gelegenheid om het slachtoffer verantwoordelijk te stellen.
Identificatie met dader en slachtoffer. Dit verwijst naar een tragedie. De omstandigheden werken verontschuldigend, het kan niet aan de dader worden verweten. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan een chaotische verkeerssituatie.
Identificatie met de dader en contrast met slachtoffer. Een voorbeeld hiervan is als gerechtvaardigd ervaren eigenrichting: een vrouw die na jaren mishandeling haar man om het leven brengt, een vader die de verkrachter van zijn dochtertje aanvalt of een man die een inbreker betrapt en hem slaat met een honkbalknuppel.
Contrast met dader en slachtoffer. Deze reactie ziet men vaak bij criminele afkeringen of gevechten tussen bijvoorbeeld voetbalsupporters. 'Laat ze elkaar lekker afmaken, opgeruimd staat netjes.' Dit komt voort uit het idee dat de wereld rechtvaardig is en ieder krijgt wat hij/zij verdiend.
