Een ziekteangststoornis (ZAS), ook wel hypochondrie genoemd, is een psychische aandoening waarbij iemand een overmatige en onterechte angst heeft om ernstige ziektes te krijgen. Mensen met een ZAS interpreteren normale lichamelijke gewaarwordingen vaak als tekenen van een ernstige aandoening. Ze kunnen herhaaldelijk medische zorg zoeken, zelfs als er geen medische oorzaak is voor hun symptomen.
Wat zijn de belangrijkste symptomen van een ziekteangststoornis?

Waarom is een ziekteangststoornis belangrijk?
Een ZAS kan een aanzienlijke impact hebben op het leven van een persoon. De angst en zorgen kunnen leiden tot stress, angst, depressie en sociale isolatie. Mensen met een ZAS kunnen ook verminderd functioneren op het werk of school.
Prevalentie in Nederland
Ongeveer 1,6% van de volwassenen in Nederland heeft een ZAS. De aandoening komt vaker voor bij vrouwen dan bij mannen.
Hoe werkt een ziekteangststoornis in de praktijk?
Mensen met een ZAS hebben vaak een vertekend beeld van hun eigen gezondheid. Ze zijn overgevoelig voor lichamelijke gewaarwordingen en interpreteren deze vaak als tekenen van een ernstige aandoening. Ze kunnen ook veel piekeren over hun gezondheid en zich constant zorgen maken over het krijgen van een ziekte.
Praktijkvoorbeeld
Een vrouw met een ZAS heeft last van hoofdpijn. Ze is bang dat ze een hersentumor heeft en gaat naar de dokter. De dokter vindt geen medische oorzaak voor de hoofdpijn, maar de vrouw is niet gerustgesteld. Ze blijft piekeren over haar gezondheid en zoekt steeds opnieuw medische hulp. De angst en zorgen van de vrouw leiden tot stress en angst, waardoor ze moeite heeft om zich te concentreren op haar werk.
Wat is de behandeling van een ziekteangststoornis?
De meest effectieve behandeling voor een ZAS is cognitieve gedragstherapie (CGT). CGT helpt mensen met een ZAS om hun negatieve gedachten over gezondheid te herkennen en te veranderen. De therapeut leert de cliënt ook om op een gezondere manier om te gaan met angst en zorgen. In sommige gevallen kan medicatie, zoals antidepressiva, een rol spelen bij de behandeling van ZAS.
