Introductie
Wetenschappelijke resultaten wijzen aan dat slachtoffer zijn van pesten vaak psychische en lichamelijke problemen veroorzaakt, zoals gezondheidsproblemen, depressie en emotionele problemen, psychotische symptomen en slechte schoolprestaties. Ook zou gepest worden verbonden zijn aan zelfmoordverheerlijking en zelfmoordpogingen. De meeste onderzoeken vonden plaats op de korte termijn, waarbij kinderen slechts een paar maanden of een paar jaar werden gevolgd. Het is daarom onduidelijk of pesten gevolgen heeft tot in de volwassenheid.
Wat zijn de hypotheses van dit onderzoek?
Dit onderzoekt kijkt naar de lange termijn gevolgen van pesten in de kindertijd en adolescentie op zelfgerapporteerde psychiatrische uitkomsten in de jonge volwassenheid. De verwachtingen zijn dat slachtoffers van pesten vaker emotionele problemen hebben, pesters en slachtoffers groter risico lopen op suïcidaliteit, en dat pesters grotere kans lopen op het hebben van een antisociale persoonlijkheidsstoornis. Alle participanten zijn toegewezen aan een van de volgende categorieën: slachtoffers van pesten, pesters, beiden (zowel slachtoffer als pester), geen van beiden (geen slachtoffer en ook geen pester).
Wat zijn de resultaten van dit onderzoek?
Drie algemene resultaten kwamen uit dit onderzoek. Ten eerste dat de bevindingen voorafgaand onderzoek bevestigen met betrekking tot een relatie tussen wijdverspreide psychiatrische problemen en sociale/familiaire problemen voor slachtoffers van pesten en pesters/slachtoffers. Ten tweede dat pesters erg lijken op pesters/slachtoffers, want zij hebben beiden hoge niveaus van gedragsstoornissen en familieproblemen, maar geen verhoogde niveaus met betrekking tot emotionele stoornissen. Ten derde is suïcidaliteit hoger bij alle slachtoffergroepen.
Wat voor rol spelen psychische en familiaire problemen tijdens de kindertijd?
Er is getest in dit onderzoek of de resultaten mogelijk gevolg konden zijn van psychische en familiaire problemen tijdens de kindertijd. Veel resultaten vielen toen weg. Psychiatrische variabelen en problemen tijdens de kindertijd zijn verbonden aan latere psychiatrische uitkomsten. Pesters/slachtoffers bleven nog steeds meer risico lopen op depressieve stoornissen en paniekstoornissen. Pesters bleven nog steeds hoger risico lopen op een antisociale persoonlijkheidsstoornis.
