Waar gaat dit artikel over?
Er is steeds meer wetenschappelijke aandacht voor het fenomeen genaamd Mental Time Travel (MTT). Mental Time Travel gaat over het vermogen van mensen om zichzelf mentaal te voor te stellen in het verleden of in de toekomst. Het vermogen om gebeurtenissen uit het verleden te kunnen herleven wordt episodisch geheugen genoemd. Het vermogen om het zelf in de toekomst te kunnen projecteren wordt episodisch toekomst-denken genoemd. Beide processen vereisen autonoëtisch bewustzijn. Autonoëtisch bewustzijn betreft een vorm van zelfkennis in samenhang met het bewustzijn en de kennis van persoonlijke ervaringen. Niet alle gebeurtenissen zijn autonoëtisch. Iemand kan weten dat er iets is gebeurd, zonder dat hij of zij daar een herinnering aan heeft, zoals iemand zijn of haar geboorte. Het betreft dus de subjectieve herbeleving van een gebeurtenis uit het verleden, of de verwachte beleving in de toekomst.
Wat zijn de voordelen van mentale time travel?
Dankzij mentale time travel kunnen mensen zich voorbereiden op toekomstige situaties en zijn zij meer flexibel. Tevens geeft het hun tijd om hun gedrag te voorspellen en te overdenken, wat impulsief en opportunistisch gedrag tegenwerkt. Onderzoek heeft positief toekomstig denken gerelateerd aan subjectief welzijn en een groter sociaal netwerk. Tevens zijn er correlaties gevonden tussen positieve mentale toekomstverwachtingen en hogere motivatie, inzet en prestaties.
En hoe zit het met negatief toekomstig denken?
Negatieve toekomstverwachtingen hebben niet altijd negatieve effecten. Het anticiperen van negatieve gebeurtenissen kan hun impact verminderen. De onderzoeken tot nog toe zijn echter altijd correlationeel van aard. Daarom is deze studie uitgevoerd, om wél conclusies te kunnen trekken.
Wat zijn de bevindingen?
Participanten die elke dag neutrale of negatieve toekomstige gebeurtenissen voorstelden vertoonden geen toename in geluksgevoelens. De participanten die dagelijks aan positieve toekomstige gebeurtenissen dachten lieten wel een toename zien in hun geluksgevoelens. Dankzij de methodologie van dit onderzoek wijst dit op een causale relatie.
Waar kan toekomstig onderzoek zich op richten?
Een interessant resultaat is dat er een toename in geluksgevoelens te zien is in de negatieve conditie. Een mogelijke verklaring daarvoor is dat de negatieve verwachte gebeurtenissen van deze participanten uiteindelijk niet plaatsvonden en dat zij zich daardoor gelukkiger voelden. De impact van verwachte gebeurtenissen die uiteindelijk niet plaatsvinden is een interessant onderwerp van onderzoek.
