Introductie
Er bestaan drie verschillende typen literatuur die hebben gekeken naar de algemene factoren van psychopathologie (de p-factor), persoonlijkheid (GFP) en persoonlijkheidsstoornissen (g-PD). Het is nog onduidelijk hoe deze drie verschillende algemene factoren bij elkaar samenkomen en wat voor invloed dat zou hebben. In dit onderzoek wordt daar naar gekeken.
Hoe worden de algemene factoren volgens GFP geïnterpreteerd?
Voorstanders van een inhoudelijk begrip van de GFP hebben de algemene factoren geconceptualiseerd als een fundamenteel domein van sociale effectiviteit. Het zou een inhoudelijke factor zijn die positieve versus negatieve aspecten van de persoonlijkheid representeert. De GFP is via meerdere manieren gemeten en uit verschillende persoonlijkheidsmodellen gekomen, maar heeft ook met veel kritiek te maken gehad. Deze kritiek richtte er zich met name op dat de GFP geen inhoudelijke betekenis heeft en dat tegenovergestelde betekenissen ook kunnen worden toegepast.
Hoe worden de algemene factoren volgens de g-PD geïnterpreteerd?
Er bestaat hierover minder literatuur en de literatuur die erover bestaat is minder omstreden. De g-PD factor wordt door sommigen gezien als een inhoudelijke representatie van het A-criteria van de DSM III. Het A-criteria betreft tekorten in de gevoelens van eigenwaarde en interpersoonlijke relaties die worden beschouwt als zijnde centraal bij alle persoonlijkheidsstoornissen.
Wat is de algemene factor van de psychopathologie?
De p-factor zou een sterke relatie hebben met verschillende negatieve levensuitkomsten.
Wat kan worden geconcludeerd uit dit onderzoek?
Er lijkt sterk bewijs te zijn dat variantie in persoonlijkheid, persoonlijkheidspathologie en psychopathologie verklaard kan worden door algemene facotren. Deze variantie kan door alle drie worden gedeeld. Wat ze wellicht met elkaar gemeen hebben is dat ze allemaal een reflective zijn van een tekortkoming of een dysfunctie (ongeacht de oorzaak). Disparate stoornissen delen wellicht niet dezelfde symptom, maar ze kunnen dezelfde stoornissen en dysfuncties delen die secundair zijn aan de verschillende symptomen of originele fundamentele tekorten waaruit de symptomen voortkomen. Zo kunnen er bijvoorbeeld twee pathologische redenen zijn waarom iemand zijn taak niet op tijd heeft volbracht, wellicht omdat de persoon onverantwoordelijk lui is of juist extreem perfectionistisch. Het onderzoek toont aan dat de p-factor, g-PD en GFP sterk convergent zijn waardoor een gemeenschappelijk individueel verschillen-continuüm wordt gedefinieerd. Deze gemeenschappelijke variantie heeft belangrijke implicaties voor de manier waarop de algemene factoren in de drie domeinen conceptueel worden begrepen.
