Intro

Backpacking or travelling in Slovakia?

  • Slovakia is a small and often unnoticed country that lies pretty much in the heart of Europe. With dramatic castles, medieval villages and unspoilt nature parks, Slovakia is a dream for travellers who don’t like to go off the beaten track. And don’t forget that Slovakia is smaller than you think, so you can cross the entire country in a few hours.
  • Activities to spot: visit Spiš Castle, one of the largest castles in Central Europe; hike or ski in the High Tatras Mountains; go on an adventure in Slovenský Raj National Park; explore the mining town of Banská Štiavnica; feel like a spelunker in Jaskyňa Domica Cave; wander through Bratislava’s old town; relax in the thermal baths of Bešeňová; taste Slovak wine; sail the Dunajec River. Animal spotting: brown bear, red deer, lynx, bison, squirrels, alpine salamander, wolves, fox, golden eagle.
  • Food spotting: bryndzové halušky, kapustnica, lokše, vyprážaný syr, guláš, pirohy, jaternice.

Studying in Slovakia?

  • There are many opportunities to study in Slovakia and the education is also quite good. In addition, the economy is growing and it is therefore easier to progress to an internship. Popular studies include applied science, economics, education, biology, management and many more.
  • Study cities: Bratislava, Presov, Košice, Nitra.
  • Language: Slovak, with more and more programs in English.

Internships in Slovakia?

  • Internships in Slovakia are mainly found in technology, engineering, and tourism and at international companies. Slovakia offers an interesting mix of Western and Eastern European work culture.
  • Competencies: flexibility, technical skills, intercultural communication, Slovak language skills.

Volunteering in Slovakia?

  • You can work in hostels, with refugees or for example agriculture and nature projects.

Working in Slovakia?

  • The vast majority of expats (and locals) work in the tourism sector, but electronic production, vehicle production and agriculture are also major sectors.
  • Bratislava in particular has many jobs and they also have a reasonably good salary.

Working as a digital nomad in Slovakia?

  • Slovakia does not yet attract many digital nomads, but cities such as Bratislava and Košice are modern, affordable and have fast internet. If you like a less touristy environment, this is a hidden gem in Europe.
  • Favorite locations: Bratislava, Košice, Poprad.

Living in Slovakia?

  • Slovakia offers an affordable life with a high quality of life. The rent is low, nature is nearby and the food is delicious. You can choose between a quiet life in the countryside (while still living close to the city), or a vibrant life in the city.
  • Education: education is solid and there are also international schools.
  • Expat community: the expat community is growing, especially in Bratislava. You can have a nice social and international life there.
  • Safety: it is a very safe country.
  • Note: in rural areas public transport is limited, the language barrier can be a problem and the quality of healthcare can vary greatly.
  • Health insurance: the quality of care can vary greatly per institution. However, basic care is free. When you go to private clinics, make sure you have your own good health insurance.

Travel in Slovakia?

  • Bratislava is beautifully situated on the Danube. The two mountain ranges in the country (Low and High Tatras) are special natural areas and form the backdrop for many winter sports activities in the winter.
  • The Štiavnica Mountains are extremely fertile because they were formed by the collapse of an ancient volcano. During a walk you will come across many different plants as well as beautiful lakes.
  • The Danube, which flows through Slovakia, is a popular place to relax for both Slovaks and tourists. Take a boat trip on the river to the place where the Danube meets the Morava River. There is a beautiful view: the impressive ruins of Devín Castle on top of a steep rock.
  • The High Tatras (part of the Carpathians) are located on the border between Slovakia and Poland and are the dream of anyone who loves outdoor activities. The TANAP National Park is not only the oldest but also the largest national park in Slovakia. Established in 1949, the nearly 740 km² park is located in the Slovak regions of Prešov and Žilina. With its impressive forest-covered peaks and waterfalls, it’s no wonder that many travellers flock to this part of the country. During the warmer months, you can hike through the alpine landscape, and when the peaks are covered in snow, it’s a great place for skiing and snowboarding.
  • The capital Bratislava is full of new and old buildings, with history contrasting with concrete structures from the communist era. Bratislava is known as a hip and trendy city where many Europeans flock to party all night long. Try to avoid the stag and hen parties if you want to get out of there unscathed. Spend the evening in the old city centre where the pubs and cafés stay open until late and the streets are lively until the early hours.
  • Don’t miss Spiš Castle in eastern Slovakia. This vast and remote fortress is perched on a dolomite cliff and is the largest and perhaps most intriguing fortress in Slovakia. The dungeons are filled with horrors as you explore the torture techniques used in the past.
  • Vlkolínec, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, exudes authenticity and charm thanks to its original rural architecture. The village is home to around 40 cute wooden houses, one of which houses a museum that shows how people used to live.
  • Watch out for pickpockets in tourist areas!
  • Slovak is virtually impossible to understand, so a dictionary or ‘Point-it’ book can come in handy.

From language courses to gap year abroad, from work experience to volunteering abroad, from paid work to internship abroad, from mountaineering to diving and from backpacking to travel around the world

What social activities can you do abroad?

    • Opportunities are found in the areas of helping, learning or studying. You can get involved to volunteer in a social project at a school in Africa, Asia or Latin America. You can get involved in nature, in a project with animals or cleaning the sea or beaches. Those who want to learn more can choose for example a language course in Latin America, Spain or South Africa.

What work related activities can you do abroad?

    • If you want to gain work experience, and/or also earn money, go and work abroad. You can combine backpacking in Australia with temporary work. You can work on campsites in Europe or bush camps in Africa. You can pretty much go all over the world to work in the hospitality industry, hotels and hostels, in the healthcare sector or for example at a diving school.

What sports activities to do abroad?

    • Have you ever thought of mountain biking, rafting (going down a wild river on a raft or rubber dinghy, climbing or canoeing), survival (which involves building rafts, climbing or canoeing), abseiling (descending a rock face while secured to ropes), zip-lining (whizzing down a cable), canyoning (starting at the top of a river and then climbing, swimming, diving down the bed) or caving (scrambling, wriggling and crawling through caves and crevices)?
    • Maybe you feel more comfortable on a bodyboard (on a half-wave surfboard, you surf the high waves lying down-with flippers), on a hang glider or while paragliding (with a parachute you float down a mountain or dune), hydrospeeding (on a bodyboard with flippers and a wetsuit on you go down a wild river via rapids) or Tiefschneeskiing (racing down through powder snow)?
