Intro

Backpacking or travelling in Latvia?

  • Latvia is a well-kept secret in the Baltic region, with forests that seem to stretch into infinity and cities that feel like they're in the Middle Ages, but with wifi! From charming castles and ancient forests to bustling cities, every traveller and backpacker can spend a few weeks here.
  • Activities to spot: hike in Gauja National Park; explore old Riga; swim in the sea and soak in the thermal baths of Jurmala beach; visit the Soviet bunkers in Ligatne; admire the art of the National Art Museum in Riga; admire the Kuldiga waterfall, Europe's widest waterfall; spend the night in Karosta prison (you'll be released again, mind you); spot elk and deer in the forests of Kurzeme; celebrate the Midsummer Festival.
  • Animal spotting: elk, deer, lynx, beaver, eagle owl, wild boar, golden eagle, crane,
  • Food spotting: Latvia is known for its hearty, home-style cuisine, perfect for warming up in the winter. But do practice your pronunciation - rupjmaize, sklandrausis, pelēkie zirņi ar speķi, biezpiens, kvas, maizes supa, kvas.

Study in Latvia?

  • Latvia may be small, but its universities offer international students a wide range of English-language courses and research opportunities. From medicine to IT and engineering - Latvia has a diverse range of programmes. Riga, the capital, has a vibrant student scene, thanks in large part to the University of Latvia and Riga Stradins University.
  • Study cities: Riga, Daugavpils, Liepaja.
  • Language: Many university programmes are offered in English, especially in the larger cities.

  • Work culture: Latvians are generally professional and punctual, but also open to new ideas and creativity. There is a good work-life balance.

Working as a digital nomad in Latvia?

  • Favorite locations: Riga, Daugavpils, Liepaja.

Living in Latvia?

  • Living in Latvia means a mix of modern city life and natural beauty around it. The cost of living is also relatively low, especially if you live outside of Riga. Education: Riga and other major cities have several international schools, making it easy for expat families to integrate.
  • Expat community: Riga’s expat community is growing steadily, with many foreigners working in IT. There are regular social events and networking opportunities.
  • Culture: Latvia has a rich cultural history, with influences from both its Baltic and Scandinavian heritage. You can enjoy traditional Latvian festivals, music, and art. Locals are proud of their folklore and local traditions, which contributes to a vibrant cultural scene. It’s a great way to immerse yourself in the Latvian lifestyle and make new friends.
  • Be aware: Winters are cold and dark, and learning a few basic Latvian phrases will help you integrate.
  • Health insurance: The quality of healthcare is good in major cities like Riga, but can vary in more rural areas. If you want affordable access to the best care, make sure you have your own comprehensive health insurance.

Latvia: Updates & Travel

Travel in Latvia?

  • Latvia is not yet overrun with masses of tourists and not yet that expensive and to top it all off, a ticket to Riga is easily booked. In addition, Latvia is also quite beautiful. Riga is a city with character, even though the inhabitants can sometimes seem stiff due to their Russian past.
  • Break out during a walk along the Kolka Cape in the Slitere National Park. This is where the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga meet.
  • Go rafting on the Gauja River. The Gauja National Park that lies around here is also worth a hike.
  • Take the cable car from Sigulda to Krimulda for a beautiful view of the Gauja River.
  • Wander through the impressive Rundala Palace, about an hour's drive from Riga.
  • Cesis is one of the oldest places in Latvia with wooden buildings, castles and churches.
  • Riga, with an impressive freedom monument and according to the Latvians the city with the most beautiful Art Nouveau buildings in all of Europe. In any case, the city has a cute center with nice cafes.
  • More and more people come to Jurmala to relax in one of the spas or to lie on the beach.
  • The historic city of Kuldiga is worth a visit, especially because the widest waterfall in Europe can be found here.
