Intro

Backpacking or travelling in Tuvalu?

  • Imagine a place where time seems to slow down, where turquoise lagoons dominate the horizon and where you know everyone on the island by name. That's Tuvalu: one of the smallest and most remote countries in the world, located in the Pacific Ocean. With just nine islands and a population of around 12,000, Tuvalu is a unique refuge for those who want to get away from the hustle and bustle. But move quickly, because it is also one of the countries most threatened by climate change.
  • Activities spotting: discover the beautiful nature of Funafuti Marine Conservation Area; snorkel in the lagoons; visit the WWII remains on Nanumea Island; go to a traditional dance evening; take a boat trip to a remote atoll; learn about traditional fishing; visit Teone Church; picnic on a deserted beach; play sports with the locals; enjoy the sunset.
  • Animal spotting: hawksbill turtles, colorful reef fish, sea cucumbers, coconut crabs, blue-spotted stingrays, reef sharks, octopuses, Pacific golden plover.
  • Food spotting: palusami, ika mata, taro chips, fried fish, banana pudding, breadfruit stew, coconut rice, fresh coconuts.

Study in Tuvalu?

  • This country may have the smallest university campus in the world, with a limited number of courses. Most longer courses are taught online.
  • Study city: Funafuti.

Internships in Tuvalu?

  • Internships are not easy to find in Tuvalu. The best chances are with UN development programs, or via universities.

Volunteer in Tuvalu?

  • There are not many opportunities, but think of education or marine research.

Work in Tuvalu?

  • It is one of the smallest countries in the world, so you will not find many job opportunities there. You may find jobs in education and possibly marine/ecological research.

Working as a digital nomad in Tuvalu?

  • Tuvalu is not a popular digital nomad destination, due to the slow (unreliable) internet and the absence of facilities.

Living in Tuvalu?

  • The nature is beautiful and life is quiet, and now is the chance to enjoy this endangered paradise, but of course there are also disadvantages…
  • You will probably find few other expats and no international schools.
  • Please note: there are few facilities, the infrastructure and medical care are limited and you are very susceptible to the effects of climate change.
  • Health insurance: healthcare is limited. So make sure you have your own good health insurance.
