Expats usually live in Bujumbura, where access to international schools and hospitals is available. Also, the cost of living is generally very low. 
• There are some international schools in Bujumbura where children of expats can receive education in English or French.
• Security: Burundi has experienced periods of political instability, and although it is relatively safe in the capital, travel to some parts of the country is not recommended. Expats should exercise caution and keep abreast of local news.
• Language: it may be helpful to learn French or Kirundi to integrate more easily
• Culture: Burundi's culture is diverse, with influences from the Germans and Belgians and of course especially a lot of local culture. You will find a lot of local art, music and festivals. Some customs include greeting each other with a handshake (right hand!) and bowing as a sign of respect, being on time and eating with your right hand. 
• Climate: tropical with moderate temperatures. The temperature varies depending on where you live. Furthermore, the country has two seasons - two rainy seasons per year and two dry seasons. 
• Health insurance: you can choose between public and private health care, with the former often not up to Western standards. It is important to make sure you have your own well-covered health insurance.
