Backpacking or travelling in Nauru?

  • You’ve probably never heard of this tiny country, or maybe you have, because you’ve landed on this page! Nauru is a tiny island nation in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. It’s the world’s third smallest country, after Monaco and Vatican City, and perhaps surprisingly, one of the most westernized islands in the South Pacific. It’s a place full of contrasts and history. Think abandoned phosphate mines, a unique ecosystem and a culture deeply rooted in island life. If you’re looking for a place that’s truly different, Nauru is a fascinating choice. You don’t have to stay long either, because you can drive around the entire island in one day.
  • Activities to spot: cycle around the island; relax on the beach at Anibare Bay; climb Command Ridge, the highest point on the island; explore the freshwater cave Moqua Well; walk through the capital Yaren; visit the moon-like landscape of the old phosphate mines; play some golf; rent a canoe and paddle along the coastline; admire the beautiful starry sky.
  • Spot animals: migratory birds, turtles, reef sharks, parrot fish, lobsters, coconut crabs, lizards.
  • Spot food: coconut fish, ika, fried bananas, fish soup, pandan cake, rice with curry, fresh coconuts, spam (yes really!).

  • You can forget that... Many students travel to Australia or Fiji for higher education.

  • The possibilities are very limited. The island is very poor and dependent on other countries.

Volunteer in Nauru?

  • The possibilities for volunteer work are also limited. In Nauru there is a unique situation with refugees who are placed in Nauru by Australia. These refugees often need help and supplies. You may be able to contribute to this as a volunteer, or work in education or nature conservation.

  • It won’t be easy to find a job in Nauru. You might be able to find work in education, healthcare and/or NGOs.

Working as a digital nomad in Nauru?

  • It’s far from (literally) a hotspot for digital nomads. It’s expensive to get there, the internet is slow and expensive and there are no real facilities. So we don’t really recommend it…
  • Favourite locations: Anibare Bay is a great place to work… if you don’t need WiFi.

Living in Nauru?

  • Life is simple, there are few facilities, but it is a (remote) adventure.
  • Expat community: small.
  • Culture: a close-knit community where traditions play an important role. The local culture revolves around family, fishing and small-scale agriculture. However, the hospitality towards foreigners seems to have diminished due to the problem with refugees from Australia.
  • Safety: very safe.
  • Beware: the isolation can be quite a challenge, as can the simplicity of life in Nauru.
  • Health insurance: you will definitely have to evacuate for serious problems. So make sure you have your own good health insurance.
